w00t! Maybe this chip isn't such a waste after all. Still not buying one, but it's a nice and nifty new feature!

By the way, Wil, is all good over there? Heard you were, um, stuck in traffic.

Why would that be lying? They said it's variable speed...that to me isn't lying, particularly when you say that it runs slower when idle...what it's supposed to do!
And what is this about 3dmark?

the 3DMark stuff is so old and it really makes me sigh to think that people still hold that against NVIDIA. I'm not saying what they did was right, but it was over 2 years ago now... 2 years is a long time in the tech world - they're on their 3rd generation since 2003...

So what is to say against clocking the gc down while idle?
It produces less heat >> lower noise. That ain't lying in my eyes. Every new Nvidia card does it i think.

nvidia has been clocking down the gpu for 2d work for years lol

just run the freq monitor on riva tuner and play a game notice the clock speed jumps up from the 2d speed and back down. Also your graphics fan usualy gets louder as it's turned up.

I think the issue here is that Different parts of the chip operate at different frequancys. Also nvidia arn't exagerating clocks as the chip at times runs faster than the rated speed.

Everyone needs to clam down and drop the ATI nvidia fued it's only helping their marketing campains.

I kind of liked how the guy talked, looked like he was caring about us ,users, not about how to get more money for less work. And it's definetly a good feature ,but why it came so late, cpu's already do that.

check out this http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2268&p=2

Clock gating tech used in nVidia 6800 mobile product might well have been used in their latest desktop GPU to reduce power consumption

thats wrong im sure

i read that in 2D mode, ie desktop, ie idle, its clocks are way down...in the 270 odd range i think

anyway, this is a good thing, its enabled a cool quiet chip to be blisteringly fast at the same time, and it bodes well for overclocking

most companies advertise the 430 clock speed, if its running faster than this at times then who cares? its not like its going slower than advertised

CPUs have about 1/2 as many transistors as GPUs and more than 50% of a CPUs is cache whereas nearly all of a GPUs is processing. It's just more complex id imagine.
