From dictionary.com:

Quote:
vis·ta (n.):
A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees; an avenue or other passage affording such a view.

VISTA (abbr.):
Volunteers In Service To America

Vis·ta:
An unincorporated community of southern California north of San Diego. It is a resort and agricultural area. Population: 71,872.
We can rule out the abbreiviation, since Microsoft is unlikely to volunteer anything; likewise, we can rule out the noun version, since the winding path that Longhorn has taken so far isn't straight enough to offer any views...
This means that it must be named after the Californian town. Recommendations to follow suggesting that Windows Vista be installed only on PCs that have been cleansed by a native American shaman while drinking wheatgrass smoothies.

More likely though, they just pulled out the dictionary and picked a word at random...it could be worse though - we could have ended up with "Windows Persiflage"

We should start a poll - I hate the new name. Then again, most abstract names sell stupid to start with - remember the reaction when the announced "Windows XP" ?

Seems fairly stupid to me as well - although if you think about it, Red Hat, Mandrake or Fedora don't make much sense either. They do sound cooler though.

Why not just call it Longhorn?

TBBFH, the name "Windows Vista" smells of ass.

But at least the "XP" meant something - although, granted the "eXPerience" didn't quite live up to the hype

They should have called it Windows Horizon - you can spend as long as you like travelling towards it, but it'll just keep getting further away.

ROFL, I kinda liked Longhorn even though it sounded a bit stupid at first, but Vista?

Yeah, It's taken what *counts on fingers*, *runs out of fingers* err.. too long to get Long-Vista-Horn anywhere near on the shelves!

I like WinDoze bashing but I still use it, I'm stupid!

Hehehehe...Flibblebot, the "eXPerience" DID live up to its name, at least, if not the hype. It certainly has been an experience in something...

Vista...hmmm...I can see that this is going to suck...they should have stuck to the year-style nomenclature.

God, what a crap name. Should have just stuck with Longhorn, tbh. Or something cool like "Windows: Death Lazer edition", or something.
