Stealth! You can't exactly plug it into a phone line if you want it stealthed!

Great idea this!

The linky for the siemens website doesn't seem to work for me! ethernet over powerline was offered to residents of Hampshire as a trial about 3 years ago for powerline internet access, but it never seems to have come about for sale in the UK.

There really smart for what they did to build that. But there complete idiots for not taking the opportunity to potently make millions of dollars from it. All they had to do was get a patient, they didn't have to mass produce it but all it woulda taken was a patient.

You can get poweline net gear here in the UK - I have some at home. In fact I have these units:

http://www.devolo.co.uk/uk_EN/produk...lanetheth.html

They're just released a faster version - 85Mbps over the current 14Mbps

Solwise also do a reasonable range of gear, along with poweline to wifi bridges:

http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline.htm

Just remember that these gadgets aren't for connecting to the Internet. These are Lan devices - you'll still need an ADSL / Cable / Other BB conection to get onto the web.

I was told the reason i didn't take off is because of interfearance, when you have a few people boiling kettles, vacuming their house etc. The noise on the line becomes quite a problem.

But thats still quite a nifty solution.

I haven't had any issues with them. They're (if you pardon the pun) plug and play. Literally.

They do say to plug them in before any surge suppressors though, as the suppressor will bugger the signal.

Well... They're replacing a 300W light bulb, so the line shouldn't be under any extra stress, it's a flourescent light, which are barely warm to the touch, so they won't melt anything, and the transformer is still in its case, so that's all insulated.

I think they're good.

Also, I wonder where they plugged the other end of the Ethernet-over-power jack into. It'd have to be on the same circuit, so it'd probably have to be in the light system somewhere.

the lights balanced on another phase? In the uk your rings come from the same feed, so using the light ring, to talk to the backroom ring would be fine. Enless you had a really nifty RCD or something that saw the very small fluctuations and stopped it. I really hate ethernet over power.

I don't know about the UK, but that screw-in socket they soldiered to would not fit into any light socket I know of here n the US. The screw in socket itself barely fits without any soldier + Wire hanging from the side of it.
