Thats funny. Maybe i start using Linux/Wine instead of windows. Did the game run under wine.

Seriously...if wine truly runs things as well as windows (I've heard VERY mixed reports, feel free to clear up anything here if you have USED THE SOFTWARE RECENTLY), linux is becoming a better and better alternative. Doubt I would be making the switch, but it does keep sounding nicer.

Particularly when it completely confounds Redmond's best attempts at preventing distribution to non-genuine windows owners.

yeah, the game runs just fine, as long as you have the... umm... "backup no-cd patch" for it.

[disclaimer]
i should point out, before someone shouts 'warez!', i do own an origonal copy of the game, and the creature isle addon, but the copy-protection cd verification system doesnt work under linux, you need the no-cd patch to be able to run the game under linux, as you do with almost all copy protected windows games.
[/disclaimer]

and yah, Wine is getting *much* better, it can run almost all windows software. the only caveat is that osme games need a little tinkering with to get them to run properly, but usually because they run very heavily optimised code that isnt "standard" windows stuff. but in my own experience, 99% of the stuff ive run will run just fine and dandy. i held off a "full" switch to linux and had a dual-boot system until just before christmas, since i switched, i havent needed windows for anything. either the app or an alternative runs on linux, or wine will allow it to run. Linux is quickly becoming a real alternative to windows. its not perfect, and it still has some kinks to iron out, but i havent had too many problems with it that 5 minutes rtfm'ing wont fix.

hahaha thats awesome. I'd like to hear the answer to the question someone brought up "what is it checking?"

I know when I authenticated my version fo winXP i didnt have to do that code thing. It just scanned my computer for a few seconds and let me through to the update section.

Hrmm.. maybe I'll set up a dual boot. I find I dont use my PC for gaming anymore these days.. and with the new consoles I probably wont use it for gaming anymore period. Its worth checking out at least.. I've heard lots of good things.

Hehe...up a little early, are we, GOO?

With the next gen consoles, linux becomes more and more an interesting option. I use my computer a lot for gaming right now, because hands-down windows is the best gaming OS there is. You have lots of control, but writing for windows (and that beloved yet accursed HAL) is easier and it assures everything just works. When the wifey lets me get a new console, though, I may just have to seriously consider the option of Linux dual boot.

God, though, I hate to reformat AGAIN....

Ehhh don't you guys think that Microsoft did this on purpose? I mean the security is made so it would check Genuine Microsoft Software, not REdHat or OSX genuinity, however the content is made available for wider spectrum of users than just MS thus it allow downloads from other OS's. Imagine how many people would be bit**ing about MS if you could not download nothing from MS website on your MAC/Linux (or other). Downloads such as Windows Media PLayer and etc. Also MS would get sued by a lot of companies and individuals if they would block other OS's. And I think MS would not have right nor reason to make checks for other OS's thus it just allows them to go through.

What is the big fuss about daaamn.

so, prey tell, how many mac's have ever needed to have directx installed? how many linux boxes are running windows media player (without wine, neither can do either). and, just to be extra nice, could you show me where the linux version of directx is, i must have missed that download link. ooooor, perhaps, directx is windows technology, and MS dropped the ball? somehow, i think the second option is much more likely.

You know, people download a lot of content from MS Downloads, not just direct X... MS office updates and stuff I guess is usefull for MAc version too, People use MS mouses and sometimes need to dwnl drivers, and if you looked at MS Download Center, you would have seen that they actually have separate sections called "Macintosh & Other Platforms." So surprisingly or not, MS thinks and makes content available to other OS's.

MS is not always bad people...

Give Microsoft some credit - do you honestly believe that they didn't consider the possibility of Linux users wanting to download stuff?

I use Windows and Linux on a daily basis and in my opinion the only thing Linux has going for it is that it is free. Windows is a far superioir OS hands down. Too bad it's so expensive.

Cheers

Before posting rubbish in old threads, think about what you are posting. Calling Windows superiour to Linux, without putting it into context is just asking for a flamewars.

You say you use both, but obviously you don't give them a fair comparison...

ah well, /ignore it is...
