VIA girls in QuakeCon clean sweep

In the first ever official Ms Quakecon tournament, held as part of the 3-day marathon fragfest that is QuakeCon over the weekend, the VIA-sponsored Girlz 0f Destruction clan took out the first three placings to win a combined US$30,000 between them.

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/08..._via_quakecon/

Does your better half thrash you at Quake III? Could you be a stay-at-home Dad while your wife goes out and earns the money, as a professional cyberathlete no less? Why is it that no guy can stand losing to a girl, yet almost any chick instantly becomes 50 times more attractive when you find out she's a gamer?

I know it's hard to resist, but can we please have a sensible discussion? These girls would seriously pwn all of you at Quake 3, so I don't want this to descend into a hot-or-not argument...

As I just detailed in an email to VIA, I would have preferred to see the cash ploughed into the main tournament - the girls can compete on equal terms with the boys. The unfortunate reality is that most girl gamers are too intimidated by overly aggressive guy gamers, and would sooner not play at all than play and risk losing (despite the evidence that would suggest some girls would do very well).

I am happy to support more *people* getting into gaming, girls included, but I am opposed to segregation - you only end up with issues like "why is the girls' prize money less than the guys?" even though both genders are free to enter the main tournament.

The solution is not to have equal prize money for both tournaments. The solution is to recognise the rare gender equality on the digital playing field, and all enjoy shooting the crap out of each other, guy & girl alike.

Well said, your pontifness. I totally agree, these chicks could handle themselves with the best male Quakers, I imagine. And thank god there's finally women doing this. Now we just need to see some chicks win some modding competitions.

Unfortunately, the pessimist view to my post is that I'm "jealous" that the girls have their own tournie with a $30k prize fund which us guys can't enter. They, on the other hand, are free to enter "our" tournament ie the main event.

The reality is that separate events is what it takes to bring attention-shy girl gamers out of the shadows. What I'm cautious of is that at some point there is integration - cybergaming is one of the few sports where both genders can (and should) compete on a level playing field.

Unless of course you feel the girls are actually at a disadvantage, since they're never allowed out of the kitchen long enough to get any practice in...? (I'M JOKING LADIES!!!)

Seriously though, I agree with that too. It's even the same way with golf, women can enter the PGA tour, but men can't enter the LPGA. Not right, imho. They want equal treatment, let's give them EQUAL treatment.

LAGMonkey will become famous soon enough
Very skilled ladies although for the time being i thing seperate tournaments for them are just what the ladies need to show that they can game. Currently there is the matcho dominance in the game industry (just look at the cover-work of most games).
I think its fab, although they shouldnt get their own tournament indefinatly.
Oh and im sure my gaming GF (GGF if you will :P) generally would hit me if i win by too much of a margine in UT. Shame i cant do the same in Diablo

I think that having a seperate torument is crazy and just reinforces the veiw that Female gamers "Can't cut it". Theres no phyisical reason to seperate female and male unlike athletics. I know at least 30 female gamers on the web (varying degrees of hotness from urgh to ). My little sister pwns me at almost any FPS. I rearly think that the efforts to get more female gamers arn't needed, if they want their own girl only clans they should set them up themselves.

When I first started playing Unreal Tournament 99 online in 2002 I was amazed by amount of females that spend their leisure time playing. At first I could not believe till we talked on TeamSpeak. And most of the female gamers I know pwn males to the ground.

I agree that there's no need for separate tournaments. However, I think it's wrong to assume that they're always because the women/girls asked for them. Often, just like it was mentioned earlier, it's assumed girls can't cut it and they need the encouragement.

even relevant? Do you rate the looks of the blokes you play CSS against?

It's a shame I'm total pants at FPS cos beating men/boys at their own game is always fun I used to be ****-hot at Clay-Pigeon shooting and LaserQuest/Point Blank style stuff when I was younger, and can say from experience that when you lose you get patronised so badly ("don't worry, that's a good score... for a GIRL"). Then when you win they often get nasty and the accusations of cheating start flying It's a similar reason as to why, on the majority of forums/sites I use, I let people assume I'm male.

Yeah, I've run across some girls in CS:S that flat out kicked my arse. And the arses of lots of other testosterone filled men on the server.

all the women i know that play any kind of fps regularly tend to do better than the guys. what they seem to do better at is keeping cool. i've seen my gf be way behind and continually get sniped by the same person. she kept a cool head and continued to play like she always does, she ended up coming in a real close second. where as when most guys that are losing, myself included, get pissed off, make dumb mistakes, then get even more pissed and pretty much give up for that round. i think it's great that female only sponsored competitions are popping up. cause let's face it the video game industry is male dominated and these comps get women out and playing. which creates more gamers, which means more profit for the gamin companies and hopefully better games for all of us. so bring on more all female compettions. plus who doesn't think a girl that can kick your ass in counter-strike isn't really friggin hot

This is one thing I do not understand. One almost never can be best in anything, there will always be someone, somwhere that is more superior than you/me in someway. Just have fun losing that's my moto.

I can't wait until Fatal1ty or some other pro gamer pulls an Andy Kaufman-esque proposal.

"I challenge you!"

Yeah, I got girled in CS:S like a week ago. She was probably the best player on the server while I saw her there. I was impressed.
