Erk October... these things had better be good :S
Maybe it was a mistake for ATI to take the top end cards too 90nm before testing on some of the lower models...
Wasnt planning on GFX updates until @ ~ october, but from their original launch date of July, things have slipped... Maybe its time to look towards Nvidia, esp if they can get SLI working on ATI based crossfire mobos...

that would be a big hit to ATI if Nvidia can get SLI working on Crossfire boards...i don't know about ATI going to 90nm cause Nvidia (or rather the companies that make the cards) are going to have to do it at some point. maybe ATI has also been busy working on the new graphics architecture they are implementing for the XBox 360 cause if it works well i think that unified pipelines are the way to go

Nvidia is iirc, testing 0.09 with lower models first, not 100% on this though.
Indeed, if ATI have a working and feasible unified design then they might be slightly ahead of Nvidia at this point in time, though would assume NV arent too far behind with this.
Seeing as the GT is probably going to be the most popular card anyways, it kinda makes sense for ATI to release it first, however they might run the risk of loosing sales of the XT if people buy a GT and master card to run Dual cards.... Its an interesting time for ATI atm, they've kinda balls'd up this launch badly

This same thing happend to Nvidia a while back with the FX line.. The graphics industry is so compeditive that I think its tough to stay on top indefinitely. On top of that, a small mistake can really set things back, especially with the expectations of the consumers in the enthusiast section.

I agree unified shaders are the way to go. It will be a while until we see that on a PC though. I say a minimum of a year (at least) since its much more difficult to program software for a PC than a single use (well.. thats only half true with the next gen) piece of hardware such as a console.

I dont think working on the x360 chipset is a good excuse though. Nvidia has been working on ps3 (although much less stress i'm sure due to a later launch). But all comparisons aside, if they knew they were going to be late.. just say "the card wont be ready till Q4 2005." I hate marketing ploys to keep interest.. lay it out honest.

If the cards are good, sweet.. but I think its good to see Nvidia take the crown for a bit that way ATI doesnt get too comfortable. This will just make ATI work 10x harder to re-gain the crown which results in consumer benefit!!!!

Yep...they've balls'ed up this launch, but there will be others. I think ATI will rule the roost again for a little bit when unified technology comes to bear on the PC with long...vista. I'm not upgrading from my 6600gt until then, though.

The definition of competition my friend its a great thing. Great for us cause we get better and better products for (sometimes) cheaper and cheaper prices.

Guess ill be waiting till october till I get a computer upgrade. I mean look at how much better ati cards hold up compared to nvidea. I see more people with 9600's and 9800's playing newer games then people with 5900's and such. I personally play battlefield(on low) with a 9600xt. Yes its not the greatest but i know people with 5900's and can barely play them. Then again im kind of an ati fanboy so it might be be byist.

They like taking turns to be on top

I only recently ditched my Rad 8500 pro (64mb) for a 6600gt, played everything ok apart from BF2 and HL2, been more than happy with both

For me it was Ati few years back, but gone with Nvidia recently, just seem to be more with it.

Heres the question tho, what am I gonna buy for me new rig before crimbo (top o' line)? (prob 7800 GTX)

much better comparing which..? 7800 and..? I'm just kidding, I know what you mean. And although I am nvidia fanboy I can say that my friend plays BF2 5FPS more with one setting set higher than mine 5900XT. Prior to 5900 FX series were terrible. I built one system for my friends (same cpu/mobo, less RAM and FX5700). Half the benchmark than 5900. Since I am 70% sure that I will not buy next release of ATI cards, waiting just makes me more curious of what the heck they will release.

I have to agree, I'm happy with my 9700np. Most games seem to be FPS these days which just don't interest me. The only FPS I have are the Thief games and Farcry so my hardware runs everything I need. Still interesting to keep up with it all though.

There are many people still using GeForce 4 Ti 4200's. Besides, GeForce FX sucked the big one and we all know it did. Radeon 9700 was quite the opposite - it seriously rocked.

if the mid-range card is going to come clocked at 600/700 the top end one is going to be what 700/800 ish? if its got 32pipes aswell thats a seriously fast bit of hardware....
