"But some are concerned that it would encourage more porn on the net."

pr0n on teh intranet? no way!

edit: excuse me if this sounds stupid, but since when did the bush administration have any say over internet regulations? I thought this was something that was larger than just what exists in the US.

wait..... you mean i can get porn on this thing?!

"encouraging more porn on the internet" isnt a bad thing in itself, especially in a .xxx domain, as the porn its encouraging will be more controllable (i.e. parental control blocks *.xxx), and would enable much better regulation of sites. as it is, whether encouraged or not, porn is growing every day, we may as well have a place to put it all.

meh far as I can see its good thing to at least attempt to separate porn from .com's etc , at least make a system admins job at lot easier to filter porn sites.

its a good idea as far as i can see.

however whats to make current porn sites with .com (etc) domains over to .xxx domians. I'd rather keep a main stream .com over any other domain type.

good in theory, but i doubt it will work in practice.

Good idea, Bush! Instead of realizing that porn exists and administering it like a civilized society, let's continue to pretend the problem doesn't exist! Why talk about things when you can just ignore them? USA! USA! USA!

If they keep this up, we'll only be able to get porn in schools and church youth groups anymore!

Seriously, though...this is dumb. Putting it all someplace would GREATLY help clean up the net and make it more friendly and easy to use for people...where not every mistype ends up being a porn site.

I accidentally typed porn.com and guess what?

Whitehouse, IIRC, was also a UK girlie mag. But named in honour of Mary Whitehouse, who led a moral crusade to clean up TV here in the UK back in the swinging sixties,

whitehouse.com was indeed a pron site. not sure if it still is, but probably (.gov is the site for the presidential White House).

Just lowered my opinion of bush that much further. Started off decent when he took office, especially considering that I'm from one of the bluest states there is. I'd still rather have him than Kerry or Dean (as dean is our former governer, he personally screwed up enough things in the tiny state of VT to for me to know the US would be in shambles within weeks)

Most filters already contain a *xxx* rule anyways... This was realy aimed at parental control, and quite franky is needed! do a google search for "shoe laces" and you'll pull up 20,000 p0rn sites... Its actualy kinda sad. That being said the main goal of all p2p clients is porn. Not music or software so that should be where the attention should be if anyone is trying to restrict it.

Read this article.

It makes some realy god points about why this should not be done, for COMPLETELY different reasons.

Erm solely for research purposes so I could "block" those sites I searched for "shoe laces" on Google and funny enough it returned results about shoe laces, and were to buy them, not one drop or hint of porn...

It would be a great time to register a few dozen adult website domain names just for money-making purposes.

OK, that isn't exactly kosher, but still a good idea

I think it is a good idea in theory. I think that if each ISP agreed to force the .xxx to porn, or adult related sites it would indeed help "clean" up the net. However, what is to stop someone from outside the US/UK/imposed area, (3rd world countries, non extradition countries) - from taking over the old .com porn names and starting them up again? If we can't prosecute them, what's the point? We shouldn't allow our ISP's or our Gov to "blacklist" domains on our behalf; that would be the same thing as them telling us that we can't read the morning post, but can read the (yourcityhere)journal.
I am not much of a bush supporter, but I do agree that we should have a better understanding as to how we can punish/remove offending sites. I would rather wait and get this one right, then go off half COCKED, (couldn't help myself), and just be the next biggest joke. Really, how is .xxx going to work if you can't enforce it?
