Replace desktop with lappy?

Hey all,

I need your advice!!

Right, currently I have a desktop PC I built myself. (Celeron D 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, DVDRW, 200GB HDD) It's a stable and reliable little beast, and I've had no trouble with it at all. I do a little bit of video editing every now and then, some photoshop work and mostly surfing/instant messengers.

However, The clutter from using a desktop PC is getting me down. There are too many cables, the tower is too large, I don't want to waste money on Shuttle or whatever, and I wanted something that I could move away if need be.

So I was thinking about selling my desktop machine and replacing it with a Centrino laptop. I already have a brilliant little toshiba laptop for college work and portable stuff, but I was thinking of getting a nice ACER Widescreen centrino jobbie for my room. My friend has one, and they are lovely little machines.

What do you guys think?

Going to a laptop is pointless if you arent going to be mobile with it. The desktop will be more expandable and probably more reliable than the laptop. Too many cables? Its not so bad you know... just get some gaffer tape or whatever and spend 15mins neatening the cable routing, and tuck the tower away under your bed or something?

Any way if you don't want to waste your money on a shuttle isn't the laptop even more of a waste

once you have a wireless kb+mouse the only real mess is that hidden behind your computer, which isn't really going to cause much clutter and can be neatend up without too much fuss...

I would def advise against the laptop, you're going to be paying a premium (over what you would pay for equiv desktop) for something completely unecessary for things that no doubt your current desktop can do just as well, if not better already

IMO a much better way to spend the money would be on upgrading from CRT to TFT (assuming you haven't already)

Since you do video/photo editing, a laptop is not a good idea. When laptops get hot, the processor slows down by up to 75%, making framerates drop, and causing things to take twice as long as they should. If you want to spend money on stuff, get a nice widescreen LCD and another 512 MB of RAM. Also, try putting your computer next to your desk (not under or on top). All I have on my desk is a lamp, a keyboard, a mouse, and a monitor.

Thats very subjective there. Not all laptops are like that. Considering hes used to doing work on a celeron Im sure not having a hot rod laptop wont bother him. I run on a sony with a 1.7ghz centrino and 1gb of ram. I even have it set to clock down to 700mhz when I run on batteries and I really dont see to much of a speed drop. Granted Im not doing much that process intensive except dreamweaver + photoshop + word sometimes...Just ram hogs...

well imo Centrino is a pretty quick little proc its got 1mb cache and is designed for mobility its not slow and would out streach a Celly desktop easy, a 1.7or 1.8 would be good but it all depends on how much you want too spend on your laptop, there are many nice chunky laptops designed oto replace the Desktop but theycan come in the £800+ range and spending that just too remove clutter is a bit of waste.

If you got the money go for it I use my laptop a hell of alot more then my desktop lol desktop is a 2500 1GB etc.. lappy is 1.8Centrino 1GB etc.. and i dont see a speed drop when switching apart from it has a an FX5200 in it and i got a 5950 in ain machine apart form that I love it too bits .

Yea but my 3 TFTs use less power then your single CRT & the quality is good unless you do more then the usual game, msn, surf then TFTs are good and there plumiting in price.

Gonna have to say keep the desktop PC. Get a wireless keyboard and mouse if you need to, but you'll end up being annoyed at not being able to upgrade easily. The lack of some IO ports on a laptop is an annoyance for some people too.
