Yes, Rain....we'd need a better interface than we do now for USB2. Now if we could use these on SATA.... We'd be able to hit the theoretical boundaries.

Is there any actual limit for flash chips being connected? I mean: Would it be possible to have somewhat like 10 or even 20 of these nice chips "in line"?
Yep, call me noob if you'd like to.

Well yeah! At 16Gb we finally get a size that will hold an OS. Imagine the boot-up speed of that sucker!

Nope, that's how the iPod Nano gets its 4Gb --by having two 2Gb chips.

4GB is enough for an OS, maybe even 2GB!

But I do want to have an OS that will boot off one of these disks, would deffo be a lot faster. And eventually, we'll be getting to silent hard drives!

So we'll be seeing some higher caacity usb pen drives then? - Although they do use a different format.

Way to confuse everyone bit-tech. Now everyone thinks that Samsung are developing 16 giga-BYTE chips. If you read the article they say giga-BIT so that's only 2 gigabytes. Still it won't be long before we have 16gb on one chip I guess

Hehe...WHOOPS...Big typo that's my fault, guys. The article is still valid, however (as gb is diff from GB) except for title. I was reading other discussions and got caught up on something talking about Apple's plan for chaining to make 16 and 32GB Nanos, and 32-64GB on a CF card, and I must've typed it wrong.

Thanks for the correction, Dex... (as Wil aims to shoot me for not specifying clearer)

It's not your fault. It's that Will's article did not make the distinction between gigabyte and gigabit and used gb to represent both measures.

Well, that I can't attest to, but when writing it I had meant to spell it out, and didn't. So he probably figured I knew what the hell I was talking about, which is occasionally dangerous. As I said, my bad guys.

And don't worry, Eclypse. The rest of it still holds true, and it's still quite an achievement. Apple is looking for these chips to expand to 16-32GB Nano, according to Samsung. These chips aren't exactly large, after all.

Huh. Well as for all you 'instant booting' guys, flash doesn't have a great lifespan, relative to an OS disk, and only boasts nanosecond seek time, but still isn't very fast sustained. Wait for gigabytes i-ram or whatever for that (4 DIMMs on a PCI card for power, basically up to 4GB solid-state drive with no seek time and will max SATA150)

Still, promising tech. I'd like to see the Gen5 iPod using flash instead of hard drives if it were possible. I mean, what else could Apple have in store? The clickwheel really doesn't need changing (except losing the dirty grey color in contrast to the white, though I don't love white either), the new Gen4's are already in color, it's really just storage after that isn't it? FLAC support would be a nice touch though.
