I would rather wait for this one:

http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/...s/keyb_001.jpg
http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/...s/keyb_002.jpg
http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/...s/keyb_003.jpg

every key is a standalone colour-display and it doesn't look ugly

Photoshop icons:

Quake icons:

http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/qua.jpg

more info on this site: http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/

the best thing is that it hopefully will be released in 2006 and it will be open source

Haz, you got the wrong pic up in the article mate.
I seriously hope that you can wait for the keyboard that you posted a pic of...I know I can wait forever for that one.

I can see why he was confused.

The interview is about the guy who designed the Optimus at Artlebedev (which rocks), but shows images and a link to the 205PRO by United Keys, which sucks and I wouldn't pay 50 quid for.

Get it right Bit-Tech!!

Hehe...yeah, Haz was a little distracted when he threw this up here, methinks. Will try and correct that as soon as possible.

In the meantime...
We ARE talking about the kick-arse Optimus keyboard, NOT the ugly POS in the picture or the link.

Will be addressed ASAP.

so the questions still stand,

when is the release idea? years? months?

and just as important

will the software detect when to 'load' different configs, or will it be manual? it would be awesome if it would 'switch' to 'photoshop mode' when photoshop was launched, and when the file menu was clicked, it switched back to regualr mode. or when quake is launched, it goes into "quake mode" upon entering game... but when the console button is pushed, it switches back to normal mode, same with the "talk" key.

that would be so incredibly awesome.

hmm kind of my mistake to, i didn't read the article in detail because i thought it was about the ugly one

but i also think the title is bad, a better one should be Interview with optimus keyboard creator/designer or something

you mean it's not as simple as FTPing in and swapping images? my word, what a silly design!

Still, the optimus keyboard will really revolutionize the keyboard, as far as a keyboard can be revolutionized and still stay a keyboard. Well, if it works well anyways. I'm going off of looks alone right now, it would need a fairly strong software backup to take off at the price we can expect.

I would have preferred if they had offered an Ergonomic model or at least weighted keys.

But surely if you don't rush, then it isn't news anymore, it's olds.
And nobody rushes to a website to catch up on the latest olds

I suspect they'll release an SDK so at the very least, developers can create & release key-mappings for their software. I'm not sure whether they'd release something like that for home-users, but even if they don't someone will reverse-engineer it quickly.

r3Q - It seems like the whole idea is to swap the key context automatically, which is simple enough to detect from within the OS (opening something in Photoshop will use an existing version if it's open instead of creating 2 PS instances).

If it makes a difference to you, buy a DAS keyboard. By the way, the weighted key switches make F-all difference IMHO.

Has been saying that since July '05. I'll believe it when I see it.
