PlayStation 3 for Spring debut

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/09...spring_launch/

We want to hear your thoughts: will a staggered release hurt Sony even further, now that we know they are launching second? Or is the fanbase just that huge that they can risk it?

you may want to fic the bit that says:

Code:
[eurl=]PlayStation 3 won't be cheap[/eurl]; deliberately price even. "We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what," he said.

In any case, sadly I think sony's fan base is big enough not to hurt them, other than that people will do what they did with the PSP, import.

Thats sad, i'm going to be turning twenty and i'm glad the system will be released near my birthday . I dont think it will hurt the fans to be a hundred or two more than the 360. Afterall you kind of expect it after how much crap they put into it, imagine how much blueray players are going to be once they are first released.

Not with Sony's view of a free market, anyone importing from another region should be sued till they die from it.

Was prob gonna get both anyway, but can Sony really afford to let the xbox have a lead of two Christmases

We just have to hope that when they do (finally) release PS3 in Europe that they don't suffer from the same absurd shortages that we have suffered with PSP. I still can't find a store that has them in stock for more than a couple of hours at a time. I mean, what's the problem - they've had 6 months to build up stocks, so why the shortages?

Add stock shortages on to a delay of almost a year between Xbox360 & PS3, then yes, I think this could hurt Sony.

I don't know if a later launch will hurt the PS3, but no matter I am still going to buy one. Just seems like the better of the two new systems to me

I dont think that high def gaming is going to be that big, as i know so few people with high def tvs. I dont know about elsewere, but in america, i dont think that many people have high def tvs. In fact i think i have only seen them at best buy, and my college.... But not in the dorms.

you're a college student. Of course you wont see High Def TV's. College students are typically poor, or spending money on other activities.

HDTV's are dropping in price.. and they will continue to drop. I just bought a 52" 720p/1080i (i couldn't justify the $800-1,000 difference for a higher resolution you wont really notice on a tv under 62") in preperation for the new consoles and also just because I wanted a big TV that I could watch movies on/entertain people with.

It also has a monitor input so when I get my laptop, I can use it as a MCPC monitor/gaming monitor on my laptop with wireless keboard/mouse combo

People are buying HDTV's for the new console releases. Not EVERYONE.. but you'd be surprised how many people will be in the very near future as prices drop even more. A tv that was 4,000 last christmas is selling for 2,600 right now and is projected to be under 2,000 by this christmas. Thats a 50% price cut in a year! for a 52" HDTV with all the bells and whistles!

I'm not a market analyst... so I could be wrong.. but I'd have to say HD is going to become a major part of life in the USA in the nest 4-5 years for people of middle class standing and up. (also, its good to note that before thsi tv the most I spent on a tv was $130.00 on a 13" almost 8 years ago that I lived with up till a couple years ago.)

Plus, TV programming in HD is so unbelievably incredible.. and movies upsampled to HD are gorgeous.. i cant begin to imagine what HD-DVD's will look like.. i'm drooling already.

People will import them from HK, Sony will get pissy and threaten legal action etc etc.
I can see why they do it - the demand in Japan alone is enough to cause them supply problems, it's the only way to make sure they are able to have enough to supply everyone and considering Japan is their biggest and most sucessful market it's hardly supprising.
Still a shame that we get the thick end of the stick, again.

I'll be looking at the HK import possibility, myself.

Sorry, but this is BS. I don't get it...I see bindi's point, but frankly they should up the production quantity then, not a hard concept at all.

It's a shame that they make such a good product, it's honestly hard to ignore it altogether due to stupid business policy. Though I'm sure it's not stupid, I honestly feel a lot of this is very calculated market manipulation.

Absolutely. Availability goes down, desirability goes up.

Actually, I recall discussing this kinda of supply issue with someone in the know... can't quite remember who.

Anyway, apparently they always err on the side of caution when it comes to production volumes because it's always better to sell out and have to make more than have oversupply. Whoever I spoke to said something like "nobody ever went bust by making too few of something" whereas even a company the size of Sony would be in financial hot water if they overestimated demand for something like PSP or PS3.

Seems silly though - how can they not recognise they have a hit on their hands and just make millions of the bloody things??

That's the whole thing - they have such a complicated devise with 7 processors and a honkin great big nvidia gpu, the respective productions companies dont have the capacity, nor are they willing to shell out billions on new production facilities which will take months/years to make, to only have them used at capacity for a short time while there is this huge demand for PS3s. Also, keeping supply short means they can jack up the prices of PS3s and keep them high for longer meaning they will minimise their loss per unit without having to pay for more production capacity.

They could launch a pre-seller, in which you could buy one, two weeks before official release for $1000 and it would sell out within a few hours imo.

That's a class idea Bindi but I hope Sony don't see it or I'll be a grand out of pocket.
