I think the fact that the customer won out in the end is important, but I'm less keen on the fact that we had to strong-arm Apple in order to get them to own up to the dodgy design.

The fact that the earliest people affected were initially told "to buy another iPod" was just unforgiveable. Power To The People!

But this only relates to people who have Nano's where the screens have *broken*.
Apple are still not admitting that the ease of scratching a screen is an issue: they're telling people to go out and buy a protective case instead

One guy i work with had his screen crack after 4 days of ownership. He had it in his pocket and then when pulled it out it was broke. It happen a day before they release this news. It is funny that before this you would need to shell out $145 to a 3rd party to fix a $200 Ipod.

Hard to say - I read of .Mac-hosted stuff being mysteriously removed...

I'm inclined to believe he did it out of genuine integrity, or at the very least, decide to comply if Apple asked him to take it down (if he was a rebel, he could've left it up there). He says several times that he likes Apple & Apple products in general, and being blamed for stock price drops isn't something that most people would be comfortable with resting on their shoulders.

I can tell you one thing - it was a pain in the ass for me, because I couldn't find any photos of cracked iPods to use for this story

.1%??

I have two and both are scratched real bad after one day of use. They have been sitting on my shelf for weeks out of fear of destroying them. There are 4 Apple stores here in Chicago and at each one every single nano is incredibly scratched. To the point where you cannot read the text.

.1% of what?

The right thing...

would have been to push back the release date or admit it up front. On day one of the release I fell for the "Oh... it has been banging against my keys in my pocket all day" excuse when I asked why the sales associate's was all scratched up.

Surface scratches are, unfortunately, a different issue. That's down to Apple's obsession with Fashion over Function. The warranty issue is when the LCD screen physically cracks in half

I'm kinda glad I didn't give in to temptation and buy one in Seattle the other week. Proves that being an early adopter isn't without its pitfalls.

Cracked Nano Screen

I've only had the Nano for 12 days and I woke up this morning and when I went to my desk where my iPod had been all night, I noticed a huge crack in the LCD screen!

I went to brokennano . com so I'm glad things will get taken care of!
