Amusingly, the boys at PlanetQuake were running a book on which day it would come out

Hmmm...their copy writers need to do some research on the Richter Scale:
Quote:
QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale
Just looked it up: 4 on the Richter Scale is described as "Often felt, but rarely causes damage."

Hopefully not a prediction...

LOL - it wasn't a bad attempt at a play on words if you think about it. But there's no getting anything past The Flibblebot

I'm not sure if anything has been announced... for now, it's probably safe to assume Doom 3-esque performance levels.

About ten times as much power as you've already got (this is a useful rule of thumb, applicable to any iD game that gets published)

Hope it's a lot better than Doom3 and doesn't eat system specs.

Does anyone know if they've updated the Doom engine from 9.0b to 9.0c/SM3 support?

Personally, this game is on a side burner until x360 comes out. I'm in no position to upgrade my computer for one game only to then have to upgrade it again next fall for the next wave of games. I'm hoping the x360 will hold me for 3 or so years.

For PC I'm eagerly awaiting black and white 2.. with that I'll be all set until x360... then i'll join you all in the quake4 madness!!! :-D

Good, I should be OK then. Of course I first played Doom3 at about 2am (when you really do need to play, preferably with loud speakers and nobody else in the house) on a 9600pro, still choppy at 640x480. I've sinced maxed out eye candy at 1600x1200 just to see what it looks like, but it doesn't stop the game from sucking hardcore. Even the duct tape mod couldn't bring it back to life for me.

Anyways, Q4 definately looks to be better and a shade (heh) more well-lit. As long as it's more playable than FEAR performance-wise, I'm happy. And if it's the doom3 engine, I'm indeed happy assuming the presumably higher poly counts on, umm, everything?... won't kick up the requirements by too much.

I want, I want, I want.

I probably won't be able to turn on half the eye candy, unless they upped the engine to SM3 support, but even so...

not a good idea to realease the same day as FEAR, when that game has been out in demo form for awhile. Just b/c ive played the demo for FEAR mp & sg, and i am very impressed with it, i think ill buy it instead of Q4

Yeah, that's about the problem I'm having...my system spec is fairly close to yours, but on the intel side...p4 2.8c. Comfortably overclocked to 3.2 right now, but still...my little 6600gt needs a bit of help if it'll be running this.

I'm now lusting over my new "want" setup, but figure I'd prefer my bones be in one piece...the mrs. would like to buy a house someday...

Bit of a shame there regurgitating a current engine, all the preivious titles have been worth wating for just to see the graphics (i think?). I wont buy it though, A: my system wont be able to take full advantage of it B: I have too many games to play already

Is it just me or has the Quake series lost its weight since Quake 2?, Quake was stunning for its time and kept people going for agggges and I loved Quake 2 but there has been far too much competion since then and doesnt seem so striking.

I hope its good...

Whens a demo available?

That's cause Q3A was aimed at online only, it didnt have Q2 story and for people hoping to "relive the Q2 magic" i will gurantee you will be disppointed because gaming has evolved so much and you expect so much more. Also, the nostalgia means you negate any bad feeling you had at the time, whereas now you will expect to have a continuous awe-inspiring experience which wont happen.

I forsee people saying "It's not quake 2! ITS ****!!" And not giving it merit for being it's own game.

Well the trouble with Q3 and a lot of other games like it is they are too simple, im open minded but I get bored of things easily if theres not much depth to them. If its anything like Doom 3 I will hate it, after 5 mins of single player I got bored, aint tried multiplayer but I imagine its rather slow paced .

Battlefield 2 does it for me, you play it how you want to, take it serious or have a laugh, it has the depth im after but its still very easy to play and anyone can pick it up. Theres still room for improvement but I think its where gaming should be heading and I imagine will do.

Speaking of BF2... 1.03 patch has just finished
