I want that! Its a shame that technology increases so fast that your components you spent loads on becomes out of date relatively quickly.

I look forwards to seeing their processing powers!

Nah, people misuse terms like "out of date" and "obsolete" far too much these days. A mate of mine has had his 3.0GHz Pentium 4 for nearly two years now I think - it was cutting edge at the time, and is hardly rubbishy slow today.

Some people will by a £150 processor every 6 months or so, while others prefer to spend £600 every 2 years. The maths works out the same, but who is better off? (Then of course there's people like me who spend £150 and then run it for 2 years or even more sometimes)

Now a days anything over 1.5Ghz should suffice for what most people do on there computers(well atleast till vista comes out). But the fx-60 look interesting but I think it will be a single core still as there is no game released with muti processor support

Maybe out of date is the wrong word, "degraded" is better i think. The point I was trying to get at was that when you buy something, then a few weeks later something better comes out at the same price, it sort of pisses you off!

Tell me about it

Then again, if we had it our way, there would be no progress. Well, not until we could afford it again

Now don't you ask me how do I feel useing AXP 2000+ . Ofcourse...if I could I would have bouth a newer CPU but this one has to do it with enought ram for a non-high end experiance. By the way AXPs can be highly overclocked you know... ...privations develop inventiveness
(By the way I'm saving money for a "non-computer" purpose)

Has anyone attempted to cascade cool one of the dual core AMD Athlons/Opterons?

£700 is how much an FX-57 costs Dunno if the extra £150 from the FX-55 is worth it though.

What is interesting is there is only mention of an x2 5000+ and not a 5200+
By following AMD's numbering scheme a 5000+ should be a 2.6 GHz chip with a 512KB L2 cache per core and a 5200+ would have a 1MB L2 cache per core.
So just maybe the FX60 is an x2 5200+, who knows, just a little speculation on my part

Sounds probable but there's 2 things that conflict with that thought: There's no certain word that the FX-60 will be a dual core processor, and if the FX-60 is the same thing as a 5200+, what happens when they decide to come out with a 5200+?

Yep, price cuts start today apparently, see the register, doesn't apply to the FX or X2 series though.

Feh. Their naming scheme is getting more messed-up. How are we going to tell which FX numbers are 2-core and which are 1-core now?!

There's also some processors reputedly coming out on the M2 socket that also include a new X2 and an FX. [ http://www.c627627.com/AMD/Athlon64/ ] So I guess we'll have to wait and see how those fit in.

But incidentally, this is good news for anyone like me with a skt939 processor (3200+) that they want to upgrade. Some time in the future (like a year from now), the 939 will be being phased out for M2, meaning this nice 5000+ will be cheap.

Nice link Stephen.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have just upgraded to skt 939 from socket A and have a lowly venice 3000. There is a huge upgrade path for me!!
My mother board claims to support future M2 cpus but i'm sceptical about that. However as it's a new board i can put in a X2 4800 or a FX-57 without any BIOS updates.

Socket 939 may not be around forever but at the moment i'm more than happy
