WTF Sony??????????

Seriously, thats the dumbest thing i have ever herd. Sony's gonna lose alot of buisness. This almost makes me want to go to best buy and stand by sony's cds with signs and flyers explaining that you shouldnt buy sony.

Edit: And about that ps3 crap, That means that i cant just bring my game to a friends house, I have to bring my whole damn ps3?

I was seriously considering buying a PS3 over an XBox360, however I think this has skewed things in MS' favour for me.

As much as I'm outraged by all of this fiasco, I don't know if Sony is really going to be as damaged by this as everyone is making out. Yes, here and other techy places on the net there has been outcry, but I don't know that this is the general market concensus - at the end of the day non tech's are not going to know what a rootkit is, or care. I guess it makes it our responsibility to let the general public know what is going on.

I guess time will tell, but Sony obviously thinks its a big enough problem to put an end to it.

(I think i've managed to contradict myself somewhere there, but its to early in the morning)

On the PS3 issue, what a fiasco that is becoming. Sony is going to have a big big problem this time round, and I believe its going to be white, and sold out everywhere in about 3 weeks time. Although it looks to be more of sony's own doing rather than microsoft.

I really wouldnt worry about the patent (aka ps3 thing) as i doubt it would be used in the US or EU i think its a JAP only thing. because i beleive that the sale of second hand software (any software) is illegal (well it was a couple of years ago and assume it still is) also as long as you not connected to the internet its not workable

Nah I think that was ended a good few year ago now. I seem to remember reading about some court cases challenging reseller rights to sell on software etc post-sale. As far as I'm aware it's totally legal now.

I personally think Sony will introduce some additional software protection for the PS3 that we won't be familiar with in existing hardware. However I don't see this becoming a reality in the way the patent might suggest (remember companies often patent every single new idea they have just to make sure it's not exploited by a rival - look at the constant torrent of patents filed by Apple and never used as expected).

Does anyone actually read the EULA on anything? What happens if after you've bought something and you decide you don't actually agree with the EULA, is there any grounds for a refund or are you stuck with something you wont use?

it seems to me that as of late sony and MS have swaped positions in big evil empire terms. with all the bad press sony has been getting and no reported cases of MS stamping on the little guys.

the companys need to learn to use the carrot rather then the stick all the time else they will just lose buisness.

Sony are just getting silly now. The whole game thing is totally unreasonable. You can't rent games, you can't borrow your friends, how many people have had to replace their PS2, if you're PS3 breaks you would have to re-buy all of your games.

Sony seem to get more arrogant by the day!

I think regarding the patent, it's also important to note that:

A: That was filed for in 2004

and

B: A man has just filed for a patent for an antigravity space ship flight mechanism, patents are often filed for and held, even when theres little or no intention of using them.

Other then that though, its good to see Sony getting their just deserved.

I refuse to buy cd's in general but this is genuinely laughable, its like some sort of "hey i'll bet you a dollar we can get away with this" But i've never been a playstation fan and this makes me even more of an xbox'er

I don't think there are any legal grounds which allow you to break out of an agreement to abide by the EULA, other than if the original EULA is found to be illegal either in parts, or the entire thing. Of course, assuming the EULA doesn't include a breakout clause or such like.

I'm no expert tho, thats what my mate thinks (he's only in his first year law degree, so he is probably wrong as well)

They're shooting themselves in the foot. They are following suit of Microsoft big business practices about a couple years ago. They shoulda learned these antics never work as society will be in an uprage and will usually use inferior, cheaper products for the price of free will.

Games only on one system? What if your system dies, or you upgrade to a better one? You can't play it anymore? and what if your PS3 dies, all the games you bought are now worthless? rediculous...

Make all the discs come from the shop as multisession, add a burner to the device(cost++) and then just burn a unique hash key onto the end of the disk, that gets checked against one in some form of onboard memory every time the game starts. That'd do it.

Of course it would just lead to a massive increase in chipping of consoles.

edit: I'm just explaining how I think this would work, I'm not saying it's gonna be on the PS3, because I don't think it will be.

There's only one solution to all this: don't buy Sony products. With all this negative PR, and the ********* season fast approaching, speaking with your wallet will give the company a much better wake-up call than any other method.

dont try and give a shoutout to itunes saying its all high and mighty, that still has silly DRM issues. if you want actual free(DRM sense) music then do just that and download it for free ;P

Argh, sony what ARE you playing at? If i bought cd's i'd be staying clear of sony for quite some time. The fact that sony's DRM so***are was modified and used as trojan virus just adds to the mess that is sony's PR atm.

Would anyone buy a ps3 if you couldn't lend / sell / trade any of your games? If your console dies, you'd have to buy all your games again? It just seems like such a crazy idea, even if it is only a patent. Are sony trying to push customers away?

Seriously, I'd be very surprised if sony implemented this. Also, once these consoles have a net hookup, sonyHQ could probably transfer you're old key to your new box. Obviously it'd open up a hole that'd mean many more people would be able to bypass the protection, but still, many wouldn't be able to, or would choose not too.
