I always wondered if a fully submerged system was a possibility for a desktop machine. I can't wait to find out how it performs.

So much for the reinforcement stock eh Darkedge? I read MS were air-freighting new stock in, but maybe that's just for theit home market... Either way, *March* is hardly "simultaneous worldwide release"... I might see who I can grill about that today

Salazaar - this isn't the first time this has been done, but yes, it's possible. Hopefully if it doesn't die before I get to Sydney, I'll take some photos / video of it for my coverage.

A group from NZ made a submerged liquid cooled system years ago using a 3M transformer coolant 'oil' and liquid nitrogen. They cooled a 466 Celeron as I recall, achieved ~1Ghz.

After I read about that project which cost the guy a small fortune (the coolant cost in the $1000's) I read up on diaelectric coolant oils. I found that while purified vegetable oils did not last as long as synthetic ester based fluids they were extremely cheap and biodegradable. The cooling properties were nigh on equal; the vegetable oil outperforming the synthetic occasionally.

The major drawback I see is the mess and the smell of warm oil (imagine 20L of peanut oil at 30-50ºC!). The weight would make it tricky to move too....
