Good to see they've used Windsor - it's where I spent the first 18 years of my life living...

although it's mis-spelt on the image caption.

I reckon there will be a select few who try to fit the new chips on their old 940 boards, with a few RMAs following.

EDIT: I like the sound of AMD's virtualization technology too. I can see several uses myself, especially if it would allow you to have your current O/S running, whilst fresh-installing a new O/S. Would reduce downtime of servers (for example) considerably.

4200 Dual core as the budget end? Boy am I a far cry from the cutting edge! I've only just gone 64bit with my 3700 San Diego! Haven't even overclockerd it yet.

Does anyone else feel their rig is fast enough? The only reason I might upgrade is to go dual core and smooth out my day to day use (DVD encoding & web surfing at the same time would be handy) other than that I really can't think of a good reason to upgrade my processor as it handles everything I can throw at it with ease (Of course the 2GB PC4000 Ram and Gainward 7800GT OC probably help!).

Processors just don't seem so important anymore, you can pick up a budget venice/opteron core for ~£100 and overclock it up to ~2.5-2.8GHz why bother spending extra to get a san diego core at £170 when the cache will only mean a 1-3% increase in speed? AMD have just been too good at what they do even their budget processors rock. Roll on 2006!

i think the only reason i would upgrade would be the virtualisation feature. I run linux, but there are somethings i still need windows for. running both simultaneously would be great and speed up os change

I think you've hit something there. I wonder if AMD even thought of that?

MiNiMaL_FuSS will become famous soon enough
im still socket A....my xp2500m sits happily at 2.7ghz all day long and i havnt felt the need to change it....my lack of higher end agp options will be forcing me to go 64bit in the newyear......however i might hold out as AM2 will probably drop the price of 939 nicely

My next planed upgrade is a 850xt
then a abit nf-7
then 2gb of pc4400 or 4800 DDR

Then I shall be at the limits of soccet A :>

Only thing I see silly is the DDR2 thing, just because you need a new CPU to change ram types (and, of course, motherboard), and I'd imagine DDR3 isn't too far off at this point.

Just out of curiosity, how would one go about running two operating systems at the same time?

I guess i may wait a bit more for a upgrade. I was thinking 939 but i may wait and see a the new features. Also if i wait i will be able to save more money towards the upgrade as it will be a major overhaul from my 754

If you hold off till this, something will come up just as you're ready to buy that makes you want to wait again. Just buy now, there's always something new coming out in the near future. This is why Dell'ers are happy - they just buy it and turn it on without any regard to what's coming up soon

I don't get AMD they seem to be releasing a new socket every 18 months its getting a little tiresome. They managed to get socket A to run for years but now its a new mobo every time you want a new chip. Me thinks they are in bed with the mobo manufacturers new chip new mobo every one is happy but the consumer. I mean what does adding one extra pin bring to the chip?
