sinizterguy is an unknown quantity at this point
If it means that you can watch any region DVD after flashing the dvd drive with some region free firmware, its definitely a good thing.

If not, then its not something that will have much effect.

Hmmm, I can watch my American version of Fight club on a Chinese computer, and A Chinese version of Goodfellas on an American one.

Will this change that>?

Nope, cause if you need to you can still RPC1 your drive or run region free software.

As long as AnyDVD keeps working, I don't care. First thing I do after even buying movies is re-rip a region/menu/UPO/etc-free copy, so I just put it in and it starts, and should work in any player. On some older movies I don't bother as they don't have previews (wtf? that's half the reason I converted to DVD!), but as far as I'm concerned, region coding is just a stupid (and fairly ineffective) form of mild censorship. We live in an age of instant worldwide communication; we won't stand for artifically-delayed releases.

Considerthing that it sounds like it's really just "Windows DRE Edition" thus far (woot for our digital millenium ), I can't imagine I'll be upgrading after the first day.

As long as it doesn't support floppies, either, I'm not entirely inclined to despise it though. But I doubt that'll be the case.

The number of first generation drives left on the market is believed to be a fraction of 1% of the market.
I was more annoyed when the VM-Bus was killed off leaving me with a couple of u/s cards. Also my old Laserjet printer never got decent XP drivers written and was finally put to sleep on 98SE.

Backwards-compatibility is fine, but sooner or later you've got to bite the bullet, or even fire it. Like ignoring IE3 users, or 640x480 screens, when you code a webpage.

Reduced operating system bloat, and improved software stability by removing an all but useless feature; win win IMO.

Meh, I refuse to code for anything below 1024x768. Of course, most of my web work is tech-related, and if you're a techie using 800x600 (or less)... uhh... yeah. I use standards that are current; if you're using some browser from 1992 that can't show pictures, it's not my problem. Though it was funny, I checked my site for W3C compliance, and when I went in to add my "it's compliant" logo, I broke compliance. How horribly ironic (yes, I did fix it).

Will you be able to, though? Doom9 is suggesting that RPC-1 patched drives will be treated by Vista like old drives which shipped region free as standard, and I have to agree with his logic - after all, all you are doing when you firmware flash a drive is putting on firmware which does not enforce region coding in hardware, which, to all intents and purposes, is what the old drives did - I would guess that Vista will check the drive for suitable RPC-2 firmware or else the drive will not be permitted to play region coded DVDs.

In any event, within days of Vista's launch we can expect new firmware for popular drives which permits any region DVDs to play and also fools Vista into thinking the drive has proper region locking in place.

That's a pretty bold statement to make about a product whose price has not been announced and which is not completed, to be honest.

I don't think I'll be shelling out for the upgrade, at least initially, as XP has more than enough features for my modest requirements at present. However, I like the look of Vista (about time Windows had a properly accelerated desktop), the security features are touted to be better (though that remains to be seen, of course), and the integration of MCE features as standard can only be seen as a good thing. I'm sure it will have better hardware compatability, as is always the case with a new version of Windows, and I would hope that with Vista we will really start to see a strong transition to 64-bit, with wide driver availability.

Of course, I doubt many people will feel urged to splash £150(?) on upgrading their XP boxes, but when it comes to buying / building a new PC, why not have the latest version of Windows running on it?

Gone are the days when MS released a new version of Windows every time Bill changed his socks. XP has been on the go for 5 years now, and it's time for a new OS. If you think Vista is a rip-off, perhaps you mean to say that you think Windows is a rip-off, which is a point of view I can understand. If that's the case, ignore MS and get GNU/Linux, which at the grand old price of £$FREE, is certainly NOT a rip-off!

Not meaning to argue, Sc0rian, but have you used it? Particularly in its more robust state?

Everyone said XP was a ripoff, too. And everyone said 2000 was a rip-off, because people didn't need a halfway NT version of windows. In fact, can someone name me an MS-OS since the release of 98 that WASN'T considered a rip-off?

Funny enough, all these complaints, and people will still use them.

Yup - WindowsME - that wasn't considered a rip-off...

...it was considered to be a particularly malodorous steaming turd.
