MXM SLI for desktops; SLI notebooks to follow

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/01...um_go_mxm_sli/

I rather suspect the Geminium-Go! is more of a proof-of-concept product, or maybe a just-because-we-can showpiece from MSI, presumably because they have SLI notebooks on the way too. But the idea of a Go7800 GTX SLI notebook just blows me away.

Sure won't be cheap, and don't you dare try and play games on it without being plugged into the way, but for the ultimate in space-saving, portable gaming, this has to be it!

That's the way to go! Low heat/noise, easily upgradable SLI grapics on one card. Please sir, can I have some more?...

This sucks. I have the money for a lappy with a 7800Go and pentium M, but now I'm waiting for the Yonah. But now... I want to shoot myself because of the thought of having to wait for SLi in a notebook. I *REALLY* wanna try FEAR but the computers in China have at best a Geforce 4 MX 64mb...

Any time-frame for this SLi notebook thing>?

SLi in a laptop is kinda insulting anyway... Since you can't cop a notebook graphics card OEM or retail...

I always wanted to be able to use the Go series cards in a desktop for those reasons. Looks like MSI have cottoned on

Edit: woot 2k posts.

How well do the "go"s perform against the desktop variants?

I'm pretty sure that they perform identically, give or take a few FPS here and there.

There's a go 7800gtx review in the hardware section that compares an xfx gtx extreme to ago 7800gtx. Posting from my phone so i can't get a link at the moment. The system is called an Evesham Voyager or something like that.

It's not really upgradable. The way I see it, it's just SLi on a card. Sure, you can swap it out for a couple 7800s, but how much will that cost? And I still haven't figured out where to buy MXM cards yet.

SAme wtih me if i wanted a rly mobile gaming computer i wouldnt want something that had built in crap. I mean battery wont be used a keyboard will be external and the mouse thing wouldnt be used. I want someone to make a computer using a laptop that is truly portable but only has a NICE monitor built in none of that battery and such. How nice would a 2" lan pc that is both the computer and the monitor be.

My thoughts exactly.
Youre still buying the bulk of 2 cards, now if it was a couple sockets that would be different but we're going to need some serious architectural changes before we'll see that. I suppose its a step in the right direction

I'd rather see 2x MXM slots on a motherboard, with a video IO on the mobo

could make motherboard layout very flexible as well

Looks pretty cool.

The next step would be to have RAM slots. The user could buy a 256Mb (cheaper) card, and still have the option of doubling the memory at a later date.

IMO, the sooner the 'traditional' x2 card SLi setup disappears, the better.

I think they've tried upgradable memory before. They were just sockets where you could stick in memory ICs.

What would be interesting, as so mentioned and hinted before, is if they produced a sort of "graphics motherboard". It would have slots or sockets for memory, and sockets for cores. I can imagine assembling a graphics card. It would be like a "sub computer" of sorts.

How viable that would be, I'm not too sure. I doubt graphics cores could come cheap, and GDDR ram also, and each new core may require a new architecture, but if they could unify it, imagine how much money we could all save from having to produce more PCBs and further leach the planet of her resources.

the cost would rise and everyone will say that they don't want to change the graphicmobo bla bla...

i think it would be better to use mxm in desktop (mounted as in this msi or onto the mobo, doesn't mind) so we'll have a standard thruth desktops and notebooks (and smaller pc)
