The problem with 3Dmark, is that games take years to look as good as the 3Dtest, basicly, its too far ahead in my opinion. Ok, you can still compare what your PC is like compared to other peoples. But why rate everyones machines as crap, when the machines your rating as the least bad, can play any game available for the next 3 months on full uber settings in 2048xwhatever ?

I couldnt even run 05 on my trusty 9500np . Maybe my X700 laptop will fare better when it arrives...

[Devil's advocate]I always thought of 3Dmark as being purposefully harsh in order to encourage people to upgrade. The situation with game graphics and hardware is chicken and egg: why upgrade when there are no games which will take advantage of your new hardware, why spend extra money and time on graphics which only 1% of users have the hardware for?

Perhaps the best thing 3dmark does is give people the false impression that their Uber system is a bit of a wimp and so push the graphics bar up.[/Devil's advocate]

This looks amazing but I always feel bad after running 05 on my XP 2600+. What will I feel after this?!

tired from the fact it would take a day to finish?
thirsty from the fact your drooling so much from the gorgeous (albeit) slideshow :P
ermmm... feeling poor
wanting to consolidate your debts into one affordable monthly loan (ok - ignore that, it sounded funny in my head :P)

3dmark is good, but tbh, its just another e-penis that you'll get someone bragging about like YO HOMIE I GOT 1k IN 06... IM LIKE THE PWN'age

when deep down inside your getting 800 in 06 cause its so extreme....

my rig doesnt do to well in 05 tbh (get about 5-6k dependant on how hard im trying - 4.5k stock) so yeah, but basically, it doesnt make me want to buy new hardware, it makes me want to overclock the crap outa mine to get the best out of what ive got...

it looks very purdy.... me want!

I've already decided I'am not going to upgrade again until MxM form factor takes off, cause I believe MxM will reduce GPU prices.

It is what it is....a Benchmark Program. It benchmarks the performance of your graphics card and CPU. As hardware advance, the benchmark requirements have to get harsher. If you ran a benchmark program from 1990 with todays card there would be no point, everyone would be getting max.

Weahter a person buys new hardware because of a low score is up to the user. Some people want to know the difference if it's worth it to upgrade a component or not based on graphics

Exactly.
The ORB is an extremely usefull tool if used properly too. You want a quick ref as to how well a cards going to play. Drop onto the ORB and look it up. If you look over 01/03/05 you can usually get a pretty good idea how fast it is, and how well its going to play games...

Does it tell me what I'm going to be able to play Quake 4 at? No - I'll stop there, but I think you get my drift.

I don't think it is close to representing game performance and we showed that with Radeon X1800XT - the card that has a huge lead over the higher clocked GTX 256s (its competitors) in 3DMark05 yet the two perform very closely in reality.

The problem with 3DMark is that Futuremark is a victim of its own success. The benchmark will still run at 1024x768 - who runs games at 1024x768 on their brand new X1800XT CrossFire? I certainly wouldn't pay in the region of £700 to play games at 1024x768 and I'm sure you wouldn't either.

Am I being particularly thick, or is there no link to a demo of the new 3DMark anywhere on that page you linked to?
