Honestly, the only point I've ever had for 3dmarkXX is watching the pretty animations. Which, since they're rendered in real time to stress my graphics card, I get to do at 9fps (if I'm lucky). The scores themselves are fairly useless, as far as I'm concerned, but the animations are great tech demos to see how much one can bring their video card to its knees. You get a sense of what level of graphics COULD happen if the 7800GTX was the standard mid-range card.

The score is not entirely useless, it allows you to compare your computer with other computers who have run the software, it's an unbiased measurement if the settings are the same. But as you say, it does stress the video card, but then again, top games will stress the video card too, along with the fun of playing it!

And there's a patch for 3dmark06, already?

The sad part of it is that to get graphics like these it takes a ton of modellers and texture artists, and a lot of development costs to make them work with games. I'm hoping that the unreal 3 engine will help make games with graphics like these easier to develop. I'm also interested to see how a physics processor plays into the whole thing.

Very, in short.

Looks nice, but that's about all I can say about it to be honest. Meh.

Dammit, I can only run the first two tests, both of which are 3DMark 05 re-hases.

The only test that I actually want to run is the snow-one but I need SM3.0 for that... grr

Well I scored 3465 (mostly CPU score) the first 3d test is basicly the same as 05 but it has better lighting etc. as for the blimp one thats pretty much the same too just the sea monster has a new skin colour and HDR is in there. The Snow one looks though.

Wow, that was a hard CPU test, I got about 1 frame every 5 seconds. I'm guessing that won't be smooth unless you have a physics card (which 3dmark 06 is compatable with).

well i started downloading it, then remembered that i always download the new ones then uninstall them after i have seen some pretty images.

so i cancelled it.
it gives no real comparison on how good your system is for gaming. for that you run game benchmarks.

my epenis is remaining the same length today

As a company I don't know how they keep going, cause all anyone does is download the free version, look at the pretty pictures and uninstall. I've run every 3dmark since '01 (i think) but i don't think i've ever actually compared my score to anyone else. The only comparisons i've ever made are before and after overclocking.

So, er, to sum up. Basically pointless but good fun.

Damn, I just remembered I had to RMA my 2gig of Ballistix and I'm running on 256MB nicked out of my mate's Mac. So i won't be able to run 3dmark for a couple of weeks.

i got 2420

AMD 3200+
6800GT
1 gig ram

Im very dissapointed though, near 600 meg download, 1.3 gig HDD space and the free part doesnt show you anything more than 05 did( except for the boring 1fps CPU tests which mayaswell been a slideshow for all its usefullness)

Don't ask me how I did, but I just bashed you.
1588 points

So, what's to say about that? It's hard but not as hard as I expected it to be... except CPU test. Looking awesome as expected. That dragon/Nessie/snake-thing... OH MY GOD... but it's just '05 Reloaded imo.
Take a look here, X2 with impressive 0.7 fps @ CPU test.

Oh, and yeah... download is fast though.

// edit: Would be nice to see an FX-60 or Opteron 280 run the test which, as I just got told, might be limited to 2fps.

// edit2: Yep, CPU tests are limited to 2 fps. For more info take a look at the 3DMark06 WhitePaper. Page 18 for the lazy ones.
