I wouldn't mind some better bookmark navigation. Not being able to F2-rename drives me insane. RSS handling could definately be better, but there are dozens of extensions out there (Sage is my weapon of choice). I'd like to know how tabbed browsing could possibly get any better, though.

as long as they dont completely change the way livemarks work i dont mind, add some more options (like being able to set how often it refreshes the feed etc) but i love my livemarks, dont break them!
firehed, tabbed browsing there are a couple of features that are missing by default from ff1.5: scrolling through tabs, marking unread tabs with red text, session management (not exactly tabs but..) and pretty much everything else that tab mix plus does, but those 3 are the main ones that i cant do without

i love firefox, but the only thing that really bugs me is it seems to actually have a load time (all be it around 30 seconds) where-as IE pops up instantly on my rig.

a minor nigle but one i wish could be sorted.

Off track

Firefox has gone completely off-track since version 1.0.4. What was a fast, lean and mean, no-nonsense browser is becoming another piece of bloatware.

With a dozen tabs including flash or video content, it now takes up to 500megs of ram on my box. Leave it open overnight and it leaked so much it hangs.

I don't need 'live bookmarks', or fancy skins. I just need a web browser that works and doesn't crash.

As for the 'squashing of easy bugs' (emphasis mine), me thinks at least I don't have any high expectations for the 2.0 release.

what really confuses me is that the memory leak was fixed in deer park alpha 2 but came back for ff 1.5 :\

That's what I heard too, but didn't realise it came back. Right now with just two ff windows open, I'm using nearly 100MB of RAM, which is a bit silly.

But I don't have any loading problems with ff, it is usable as soon as I log into windows.

easiest way to test is load up a very image heavy thread (porn threads *** ) check memory usage, kill the tab and check memory usage again
in deer park a2 it went back down to normal but ff 1.5 doesnt
i only use 5 extensions in my ff now, tab mix plus, adblock, ietab, image zoom and download statusbar

"A spell-check right within the browser, without having to go download an extension? Now there will be no excuse for bad speelong!"

...

I think they should have left it where 1.07 was and just leave feature additions to extentions. They need required resources to be minimized and have a built in Opera-style download manager and password manager and then it is perfect.

I'm always nervous when claims of better, more intuitive, and interface facelift are mentioned.

It isn't my primary browser now, so I can only hope it is an improvement.

That is because IE has been embeded in the windows OS, so that it is sort of pre loaded. When you click on the icon it has to load very little, and then display the window. Because of this FF can never match the speed of IE opening.

Grab hold of the TabMix+ extension and find out. Hopefully they'll bring in more of the features that are in that and the old Tab Browser Extension.

'Undo Closed Tab', with list of recently-closed tabs, 'Merge Windows' when a new one slips through, and 'Session Saver' I like.

Ideally the idea of the lean browser you add just what you want to is good, but too many good extensions get buggy when the Firefox code changes (like with TBE). Integration of some popular mini-features should fix that.

Hmmm. I live happily with only 1 of those, perhaps integration is a bad thing after all...

scrolling through tabs with the scroll wheel rocks! best way to switch tabs ever
maybe integration is a bad thing but those are the 3 things i'd love to have by default in ff (undo close tab too, forgot about that one) as it'd allow me to drop another extension
i dont mind those features not being in as i just use tab mix plus to get them

I like modularity. Let me download the plugins I need, Mozilla needs to just work on making the smallest, lightest base for me to add to that they can.

a dozen tabs with flash and video? im not surprised its going a little slow, you try having that many ie windows open, it crawls

and as has been said, ie is embeded into windows, so has less to load.

personaly i think they should offer two versions. one thats simple and just has the basics that can be added to if people want to (for people with slower machines), and another bundled with all the most usefull plugins, like a spellchecker and improved boookmarks etc.

Firefox have to add these extra features because its likely that ie will add them in. people probably wont want to be bothered with instaling plugins (and most dont even know about them). The problem with this is that it slows down the software, which is something that microsoft can easily avoid by integrating it into the operating system. Firefox will never dominate the market simply because people are given internet explorer to begin with and the majority will be happy with that.

There are two ways firefox could have gone: a simple steamlined browser thats fast and has few features, in which case it wouldnt be much faster than ie and would have no noticable advantage to most users or they pack it full of features, which most users will see and think are brilliant and say screw it to the loading times, machines are getting faster anyway and they need features to compete with the next round of ie.

I could quite easily have a dozen windows of IE open all with flash or lots of pics without it slowing down a noticable amount. I used to be able to do the same thing in firefox when I first used it before version 1. Back then it loaded faster than IE as well.

I am not sure if im right on this, but I get the impresion that extensions slow firefox down quite a bit and this might be because they are not compiled or something (not sure how they work as I haven't been bothered finding out).

Of the new features the only thing I am looking forward to is the new bookmark features. At the mement when searching it doesn't even search the keywords or the description so wtf is the point of having them?

Adblock, User-agent switcher, and back-is close should all be integrated, as they are all tiny and useful. Go Firefox!
