Shouldn't microsoft support people using them as computers? Even if people aren't loading up Windows, they're still buying the console when they otherwise wouldn't have done so. I wouldn't even consider buying any new console for gaming, but if I can rip it apart and use it as a cheap computer, that could be more money in their pocket, and that offchance that I'll be impressed and start to game on it.

Maybe once they're not losing money on the hardware itself...

Of course, with the lack of availability on the 360 right now, that's not really an option.
Xbox 360's are really not hard to find around here, I walked into the local walmart and they had 10 of them behind the glass. It looks like the shortages are over, I've seen them all over the place from Manitoba to Alberta, in Canada. Although things may be different in your local.

It never matters what companies do to lock down a product like this, there is always someone who will see their efforts as simply another challenge to overcome and find a way around.

With regards to the xbox being hacked, it has been out since Nov and all they now is how the dvd file system works, and they only found that out due to a kiosk disc being sent out with out encryption.

Alos this time round the security has been built into the cpu from what i remeber and it is making it very much harder to bypass.

The orginal box was cracked and hacked in less than 3 months, if they make it to a year with it unhacked MS should be utterly happy with themselves

They bank on selling a console at a loss then making enough money back on selling games over the next 1-2 years to cover the costs and make a profit, if the machine is hacked any time before they have the next console out it will allow pirated games and reduce the chances of actually making any money on it .. don't see it happening, even when its been so long its just the principle of the thing left myself.

If Only They Would Listen

As already stated if Microsoft allowed full concole hacks they would open themselves up to a real big loss. Since we all know the goal of most console hacks is to play burned games and games is where they make the money, consoles(at least MS consoles)sell at a loss. I think what they should do is give out free dev kits to those interested in homebrew games. This would be great as struggling game developers could create games and give away or sell in the xbox marketplace. You could create a game load it to the marketplace and set it to free or charge. MS of course gets a cut of the sale and the developer gets in on one of the biggest platforms around. This seems win win MS makes profit on =something that is already up and going, new developers get a foot in the door and we all get a slew of games, for cheap or free. MS could keep an eye out for hot new talent that has already proven itself on thier system. If only we lived in a world where corporations helped to foster creativity and freedom of expression. Oh well maybe someday.

I personally think MS should try and find a way to keep it so copyed games & DVDs cant be played on the platform, prehaps a BIOS update that does the disc checking? But keep the rest of it open to allow 3rd party apps to be run.
How many more people bought a Xbox1 because of the ability to use XBMC? Or to use it as a NAS? Could work to MS's benefit if they play their card right.
