Bah! This is just the sorta thing I was hoping wouldn't happen. If DX10 is vista only us gamers are going to have to move over within a matter of months if we want to play modern games. This is a really ****y thing of microsoft to do to us. I guess I shouldn't expect anything more from them though.

Great move by Gates, DX 10 exclusive games will force all the nay sayers to switch. I gotta give it to Gates a very smooth tactic indeed. If all the Game designers follow this lead which they all will we'll see the end of XP much faster than I originally anticipated.
I'm so glad Bill Gates had the ballz to do this. It's great when you have money and power. |

I guess it helps that Bungie are owned by Microsoft, so in the same way that you had to buy an Xbox to play the original (initially), you'll need to move to Vista.

Asshats.
That really pisses me off that they are going to in effect *force* people to upgrade to that DRM-infected pile of poopbiscuits by refusing to release DX10 for XP. That'll be the end of MY PC gaming. *%()@!~~!!!

Anyone think DX10 will be hacked to allow it to work with XP? If so that would allow Halo and some other DX10 games to work on XP. I don't plan on getting Vista when it first comes out, god knows how many bugs there will be!

doubt directx 10 will ever be ported to xp by a third party because if a game is ment to only work with directx 10 then it has no need to be compatible with xp in any way so there will be more than just directx stopping your game working on xp.
On the bright side there is always openGL (doom3 was done in that and it didn't look half bad and had a linux installer on disk) and directx 9 isn't exactly looking old yet if the stuff futuremarks been showing off will work with it.I doubt many game developers will move to directx 10 untill vista is widespread as there limiting there consumers, so to stop game developers moving to vista, don't buy vista

XP's old and runs like crap it's about time they kill, when it's time to go it's time to go. As for DX 10 hack maybe but I doubt it'll be any good considering DX 10 was designed with Vista in mind.

Problem is the majority of gamers are people who've bought prebuild systems and their kids have bought a game or two, they don't care about things like this.
As always, the masses who don't care hold the power, and the few who do care are powerless. This is why democracy sucks people

How long will it take for most of the population to switch over to Vista? If I were a game publisher, I would be very interested to know that if I publish a game that utilizes DX10, the market is limited to only those people running Windows Vista. I would be happier publishing a game that can take advantage of DX10, but only requires the "older" version (if that's even possible). The market is much greater that way.
This seems similar to the old hardware debate that every new release of a game forces people to buy new hardware. As much as that thought never really pans out (Bit-Tech staff has proven that 2nd and 3rd generation hardware can run games at playable settings), I believe that the idea of Microsoft forcing everyone to upgrade to Vista to play games will turn out to be something that we all feared, but never amounted to anything. Of course, I don't really know a whole lot about the business side of game publishing and Microsoft's OS, so I could be completely wrong. -monkey

LOL Everyone's getting all while up over something that was bound to happen.
Force upgrade 101 (Incompatibility): Take away a vital capability that consumers value even more then their wallet. Why get a PS3 when PS2's running just fine, can't play PS3 games on a PS2. Sht Why get Mac's new OS when the old one's running just fine, can't upgrade to the newest H264 quicktime player. Sht Why get Vista when the hundred year old XP's running just fine, can't play the newest games. Sht. End of lesson on force upgrade 101, next lesson Bells and Whistles. |

Kipman725, the current top end hardware will be the correct hardware for Vista, so games will be made around this hardware, DX10 will also be made around this hardware, so although DX10 will be fixed to Vista, I don't see hardware being the limiting factor to bring DX10 to XP, so I wouldn't say it isn't possible, it's just the fact on who's willing to do the job, I hope someone is!
Kaze22, although XP might actually be starting to get old (5 years now), it is probably one of the better Windows OS's, much more stable than 95, 98 and definatly more stable that ME, W2000 is pretty good but I do prefer XP because of better usability. But imo, I don't think we need to kill it off for a while yet! How much did XP cost when it first came out? I can't remember at all! EDIT: Quote:

I mean, the first one was pretty good, but I just couldn't be bothered with the 2nd... And according to my bro, the single player part of the game was pretty short, and a bit pants. As for DX10 being Vista only...cheers M$. I don't really like being forced into OS upgrades just because I play games... I was planning on sticking with XP for as long as I could, but looks like I can't now. |
