Can you get 80mm CCFL fans? Stick one of them around the lens instead with some diffusing material, like thin cotton, between.

Nice idea mind.

Ahh....

Right then.. where to begin?

Ring flash (which is essentially what this is), is actually not a great idea for close up shots of thongs like computers, and components. One defining feature of ring flash is a shadow is cast in ALL directions, making what appears to be a black halo around everything... it's also VERY harsh.. Here's an example of a ringflash shot I took recently

As you can see, it's a nice effect for a fashion shoot, but for close macro work, probably not the best solution.

Use it with care, and be careful of the ring shadows on parts that have components that can cast shadows.

A MUCH better way is to use the advice I've posted in THIS thread.

It's a great mod tho... not disrespecting that.... just be aware that ring flash is not necessarily the best way to shoot things.

Yea, you need WHOLE AREA in-direct lighting to make everything equal, really. But for those of us who.. uhh.. cant be arsed. But then again, if you're going out your way to make a ring light, you might as well get off your arse to make a light box.

Bindi is right.. a light box would be better, or better still, a light tent, where the subject anc camera are fully enclosed in a light source. Easier, and cheaper to make too.

I meant a box big enough to encompass the entire object. Tent makes me think of "room size".

Is that your missus in the 2nd pic?

Speaking of the camera and lighting, this one is interesting as well.

They can be small as well. I've rigged them up around 2ft square for small objects.
