about bloody time too!!!! i see AOL isnt on the list though, but we are a long way off Korea having a 100MB/s interwebnet connections.

but i think it wont get much faster in this country untill it becomes wifi based as opposed to phone line based, like Korea

Considering NTL has had 10MB for some time now (one of my mates is on it) its about bleeding time!

Also there is rhumor of NTL conducting internal trials of 50MB and 100MB connections to go live by 2007-2008 apparently.

its all good about the faster speeds and its welcoming change to most people 1meg connection. but what about people like me, i live in a surburb of London and yet my isp Pipex has given me flawless service but a few minor hickups. My problem is that my line has probs keeping sync with the modem.Afer numerious calls and lots of changed and actually physcially chaing my phone line and chainging my pci-adsl modem i still have this problem.

Actually i should be on 2meg but that was giving me major probs sooo....these changes dont actually affect me which is a kick in the balls as i want faster speeds.

its just all abit unfair.

It often depends on how far you are from the exchange, the line quality (anywhere between you and the exchange, and even from the exchange to the network), interference from electrical cables and in the air etc. Unfortuantly some people will have problems, the further from the exchange, the more problematic it can be. If you can't get 2meg, that you are going to be stuck with 1meg as that will be the maximum attainable line rate for you. Having said that though, BT have supposingly increased line stability for the 8meg service, so you might be able to get slightly higher speeds now.

Also, some modems keep in sync with the line better than others, so you might want to get a new router or modem.

I'm fortunate to live quite close to the exchange, I'm supposed to be able to get up to 6.9mbps, I'm not sure whether the speeds will be capped at a static 4mbps, 6mbps and 8mbps or it will be dynamic to the max, which I hope it is!

Go to samknows.com, there'll be a map on where your exchange is in relation to your house, from that you can use the map ruler to work out how far you are!

EDIT: After a bit of research, I should be getting LLU in may, which hopefully means I can get 24mbps if an ISP supports my exchange!

I live *next* to my exchange. Seriously - like 30m away. Yet we're limited to 2MBit until this upgrade goes through.

BioSniper: as for 100MBit in 2007 / 2008, you can already get such net connections in Sweden for like $30 a month, I'm told.

I know I only wish NTL were to price that low, who knows, maybe they will.
I was more pointing out that we should hopefully be getting good speeds here in blighty too in the next year or 2

Waiting impatiently for the 31st to come! I live very close to my exchange and can get flawless 2Mbps at present, so I am hoping that 8Mbps will be easily obtainable.

Looks like we're ahead in Belgium: I've had cable with 20mbit down / 1mbit up with no transfer limit for about a year now. It's not cheap though, at 70 euros a month (about 48 £)...

Postcodes can cover quite a large area so they're inaccurate as you could be right next to the exchange or right on the edge of the postal area. Using your number is more accurate as BT know exactly where your house is in relation to the exchange and what the line quality is.

Many moons ago, when I had ISDN removed & replaced with ADSL, I asked the BT engineer how far from the exchange I was.

He told me the line length was approx 985meters, so that should be a nice 6megs at least. The next thing to do is find out which of the 2 upload speeds my ISP is going to give me.

I'm with Eclipse, they made a point of regrading every customer they had last summer so as to be ready (it took BT 3 months even then)

Wootage!

I'm on 2Mb atm, with the following stats:
23db Noise Margin
27db Attenuation
I'm guessing that's in spec for 4Mb...not sure about 8Mb though.

I feel sorry for my dad...he only live a couple of miles away, but he's lives in the first house you come to (down his lane) that isn't on the Louth exchange.
No broadband whatsoever for him...hell, the best he gets is 26k through dialup!

It's all well and good that the vast majority can get 8Mb, but I wish they'd sort out the rural exchanges - not everyone lives in a big town/city you know!

I'm with Eclipse too. I actually had my exchange enabled on 31st March 2004, so (almost) exactly 2 years later we're getting a 8Mbps upgrade.

OMG!!! i live within roughly 1000m of my exchange yet i get these probs?? whats up with that?

Well ive got a new modem on the way curtosy of another forum member. Well i can get 2meg but the problem seem stronger but if ur saying that with 8meg the service will be improved then im willing to give it a try.

It also seems like my area is allready ADSL Max enabled.
