Jk, I always thought those lame wires out-back sucked, NVidia had a much better idea with the clip.

No, seriously it's a welcome improvement.

That was the only real complaint I had about crossfire. For me the dongle went away with my vodoo 2.

No kidding, though the Voodoo2 rather predates my enthusiast times. For me it's the waterblocks not being cross-compatible, but the big external mess was definately a downside as well. I'll have to see how the 7900GTs pan out perhaps, since they should fit my block and I'm going to need to start working with some insane resolutions as soon as I start to game a bit more, now that my environment is properly uber.

I'd had more than enough wires coming out the back of my box though. A dongle for Crossfire just wouldn't be any good. A pair of DVI plugs alone is overly bulky... thankfully I've got a DDL sound card so I only need the one digital cable for 5.1. Anything that keeps it mess-free is a welcome change. Now all we need is that unified cable dongle thing so it's just that and power coming out of the back.

WHAT?
a) who the hell cares if it's down the back of your PC anyway, you have enough wires down there to make a server room look tidy. Lets be honest here.
b) Retro eff tee double u. Voodoo was kick ass and I still have my dongle AND my voodoo card.
c) at a guess the first batches mebbe 16 pipe unlockable??
d) Does it work better on a 580 versus 480 considering the extra info is passed over the PCIe bus?

Wow, this is deffinately an improvement but as bindi said I doesn't really matter TBH, It's like saying "I'll buy the less powerfull product(and pay more money (refering to the 7800GTX512)) because it uses less cables at the back of my pc"....

a) Yes there are a lot of wires round the back of my PC, and I'd rather have less than more wires.

ATI Crossfire with cables is a horribly flawed solution, I remember the hell of trying to get the cables working properly with the Voodoo 2, the puzzle of cables clustered around my graphics card, and most importantly the limited resolution supported by such a solution. ATI has not addressed a single one of those issues, except perhaps the first one because it is now an all digital connection.

Aw cmon, it's not HARD. I was 14 when I plugged my voodoo straight in and got it working. Ok, it's not ideal, but at the end of the day you dont see it and it'll just hang with the rest of them. Once it's plugged in why should you care?

Personally I like a setup that is as clean as possible. The fewer cables, the better.

Mine had a tendency of displaying a pink image.

lol it's peasy I had a voodoo 2 when I was 12!
(shows how I always get obsolete hardware dosen't it :P)

what it does do for ati is cut the cost of their cards by a few £ and so give them abit more of an edge against nvida.

You sir, are a fine man and have hit the nail dead on the head. My system is under my desk and I never see the wires unless im going down there to look at them or unplug them anyway so its really not an issue.
I guess though alot of people are fussy enough for ATI to bother.

If we didn't care about how the cables looked, we probably wouldn't be hanging around a site with such a strong emphasis on modding!

Yeah yeah, I know holy thread rivial, blah blah. But if I'm looking at this correctly, you don't need a master card for cabless X-fire ?
