Yes, but they are talking about Windows Vista Home Premium, which will apparently replace Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

The difference is that vanilla XP is a desktop OS, but MCE (and therefore Vista Home Premium) are home theater operating systems. What is a home theater if one can't play back DVDs or even HD DVD / blu-ray? That's the issue.

Considering MS is one of the companies pushing HD-DVD you would think they would include a codec for it in their own software.
Still can't say it surprises (and frustrates) me though.

Having said that if Vista stays the same as its latest build (5308) I know I won't be going anywhere near it with a 50ft barge-pole as its way too clunky for people who are used to the current systems. 5-6 seperate menus to do the same at Right click desktop -> properties does in 1? or how about 4-5 menus just to change my IP address? No thanks!

No its not, if MS bundled it into their software, the EU and other groups would start winging about it etc etc and then sue MS etc etc (take a look at WMP et al)

Yep Buzzons, I think you got it there.... They will be in breach of sooo many anti-competition laws unless they included every codec avaliable, so why do it?

Nevertheless, I think DVD is so well established that it is a bit of a joke for MCE to ship without a native DVD codec.

I think you're mistaking codecs with software.

Afaik the cases against Microsoft relate to them supplying software bundled with the OS, by doing so it prevents competition by 3rd party suppliers who have created software with similar functions ie web browsers, media players.

A codec however merely encodes and decodes a data stream, it is independent of software and is useless by itself. The inclusion of a codec in an OS would not prevent competition for 2 reasons, firstly there is likely to be only one codec for a specific format and secondly individuals will still need to obtain a media player of their choice to use the codec.

LOL Good for MS, if they do include the codecs they might get sued by the European Union for monopolizing next generation video codecs and be forced to strip them out or pay a ludicrous fine. MS just can't win.

yeah, with the codec/software thing... They do include the software, like Media Player will play DVD's with the right codec. I did think that a number of companies supplied DVD codecs though - ummm, cyberlink and winDVD spring to mind.

Of course, I'm not sure, as always

I would say it's worth delaying the operating system just for another month until the codec of the next-generation DVDs are out, so that it can be pre-installed in the OS, ready to be played with out of the box.

No they provide different software, they all use the same codec within their software tho

Nothing wrong with having to use a plugin IMHO.

Chances are, Microsoft would use a container with too much overhead for my liking anyways.
