Thats a slight shame though I dont have an HD-TV so really for me there is no point, plus the fact that early adopter prices are usually stupidly high with next to no releases

I don't see it as a huge problem that the players are released before the media. The first DVD I purchased was The Matrix, and I didn't get a player until 3 months later.

Hopefully they'll use the same packaging style as DVDs, so that I can begin to integrate them into my 170+ DVD collection.

I have a LG HD upscan DVD player now, so it'll be great to move to real HD. Judging by how much better SpiderMan 2 looks on my upscan and 57" compared to just my old progessive scan, I'm getting stoked about the new stuff!

I'm very happy with DVD right now, I can't see myself upgrading for a while yet. Is the jump in quality really going to be as good as VHS to DVD?

May buy an xbox360 at the end of the year so I can test out my new HD-TV then. On that note, the xbox 360 can play HD-DVD right?

Nope. It might get an external HD-DVD drive as an accessory. It doesn't have a builtin drive.

I've wondered that too. But I don't think it'll be as major, just a quality increase. DVD to VHS brought with it the extra features, extra control (skipping scenes etc.) and the need to never rewind again!

Though I've had people ask me in the past how long it takes to rewind a DVD.

Good post.

To add my input- The quality increase will be dramatic for HDTV owners, at least it is to me. Watch T2 in WMV HD on your HDTV after watching it in normal 480p format *both come in the extreme edition, and you obviously need a PC with capability to handle WMV HD 1080P and H.264 1080P connected* or a H.264 1080p movie trailer, and you will see why some of us are so stoked. At least on my set, anything not in HD res. has a distinctly inferior picture quality, and then just changing the channel to a 1080i channel, for instance, is a massive improvement.

EDIT:Found a thread right here that links to the dramatic difference in PQ. here is the link

The difference is definately noticeable - especially in shot 1, showing the map - the detail is a lot better - it almost looks like 'bump-mapped' textures.

Shot six really shows off the detail difference. It is like properly focusing in good optics on a SLR or somethin'
