What does this mean for Joe Average? Like monopolism at a microsoft-ish level soon?
Like paying even more for Alienware stuff?
Or may all turn out to better that way?
I don't know. But it's sad to see another good-ol' enthusiast company go down.

@ Will: Nice sig. Still pissed as I missed them when they were here in Hamburg.

I bet many others are unsure (like myself) if this is a good thing or not.

It could bring Alienware's prices down, as Dell's mainstream computers are very reasonably priced (from a business point of view anyway). It could ruin Alienware, with their bespoke equipment, and their mass appeal.

@ aon`aTv.gsus666: Nice sig too. Still unsure about their new single though...

You can find Dell's offical statement here:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topi...us&l=en&s=corp

They state that Alienware will continue to run itself and that Dell won't interfer. They are just becoming slient partner, it's just public knowledge.

Me neither. It's...ehm...different. But I already love the chorus. Maybe we'll have to get used to the new sound of him. And improvement/development ain't that bad at all.

Um

It migth be miore interesting than that given that Dell opporate rather differently to the others, actually making their own motherboards. Potentially the Dell/Alien gaming PCs might be much more focussed whith dell's resources behind them.

Yea, but as we all know every enthusiast gamer flashes Dell's BIOS asap... there must be a reason for that, don't you think?

Even though I have to admit my girl friend's Dell laptop rocks when talking about performance. Hmm... gotta get my hands on one of those Pentium-M's.

Enthusiast gamers don't buy Dells, which I think is the point of this takeover. Unfortunately no one told Dell that enthusiast gamers don't buy Alienware either

To me buying an alienware is just the same as buying a Dell , or a Compaq or whatever , so its no biggie to me as i shall never buy any of them.

I'll buy nothing from either of them. I think it's strange DELL bought Alienware, but other then that, it don't matter to me.

Good distinction there. If someone asks me about getting a new PC I'll probably send them Dell's way, assuming they want to shoot aliens and surf the web, instead of messing with screwdrivers and driver downloads.

exactly.

Unless yu're after a specific hardware set up, or an AMD specific system, DELL really do offer good value for money for your average PC user.

Their lack of AGP ports on some optiplex's motherboards with onbard graphics is questionable, but as a business buyer what can you expect? they were only £200 each - and apart form that, they are really solidly built and come with a good level of cover against faults.

i think this is a good thing, and although Alienware dont need the support from dell, the added heft of such a huge successful company has GOT to do wonders for it, and in return if we see AMD chips in DELL boxes, alls the better -

hopefully dell just replaces all of their XPS ads with alienware ads, since XPS wasnt cutting into alien's market share, they just bought them, and now they will advertise and support them. i think dell would do well to just treat them as the "skunk works" of dell, let them play, and reach their nitche market, with alittle dell advertising and dell making the profits.

Most advanced computer users probably build their own PCs (allowing them to specify the system configuration/specs) and are regularly upgrading the components anyways; so they probably don't really care about the Dell/Alienware merger.
Also PC vendors lock down their BOIS to restrict people from overclocking
