You know, after having my nano (4gig, black) for a couple months now, I must say that the only problem's I have are: volume, and battery life. With my headphones (behind the neck with 1.25" drivers) I have to have the volume cranked to have the music at a listenable level (note: not loud), and as such this makes my battery only last about 4-5 hours at most (the battery in my PDA lasts longer than that!).

The other issue I'm having is that if I'm listening to a quiet album (say: Daft Punk's Discovery album) and have the volume set almost right to max, after about 15-20 minutes the volume will go right to minimum without warning Anybody else experienced this?

But otherwise: silly idea to limit the volume on a device such as this. Though I'm starting to think I should get evicted due to loud noise then sue Logitech for making their speakers go too loud

It could work!

Well, CYA is all good, but it's not that hard to turn it down (just as it's not hard to uncap the volume on European iPods). Hopefully they fixed the bug with videos on the 60GB video though, I'm stuck on the 1.0 firmware because they stop after 15 seconds on the 1.1. The 1.0 is really laggy, but now that I found Google Video lets you download clips in iPod format, I've actually been using that part on occasion.

Funny, because I just cranked my main speakers. 25% on them (z-5500's) is crazy loud in my room, and if I up the sub volume a tad (so I don't have to lose all of my hearing) it'll just about give me an arse massage. But if I blow my hearing, I'm not the type to go sue Logitech. In fact I specifially told my parents that if I ever die doing something that should win me a Darwin Award, feel good knowing that the world is better off for it. I heard some news story where some kid died from inhaling keyboard cleaner, and my gut reaction was "Darwin 1, stupid kid 0." Why anyone would want to try getting high off of carbon dioxide is beyond me, but there you are.

The good news is that the stock iBuds distort music not much higher than the unsafe level, and that's usually indication to most to bring it down a notch. I always have to screw with the EQ in the car since it sucks at treble (stock system, but it's not my own car and I don't care much) and if I crank it, it distorts pretty horribly.

I give myself enough respect to turn the volume down when it gets too loud.

with my sure headphones i have the volume right above the lowest possible level. However, i have it around 3/4 when i play my ipod on my stereo. I wish apple would make better volume management. Different profiles would be great for me since i only use two different volume levels. If people want to kill there ears with high volume, let them. Why should apple refuse to allow people to blow out there ears at the expense of people who safely use the higher volume levels.

After having used this for ten minutes, I'm glad they implemented it. Firstly, it's OPTIONAL. And more importantly, you no longer have those insane volume spikes when you overdid the volume scrolling. I turned it on and set it to about 80%. It, in effect, causes the normal volume scroller to only work on that 80%, giving you a bit more precision (so, in itself useful if you listen with headphones at night where you want to do minor tweaks at low levels, it's no longer doing a single pixel's worth of volume change at a time to get what you want - basically I make it so each pixel on the volume indicator corresponds to, say, .25% of max, rather than 1%). And it saves the earbuds a bit, as they'll distort to hell at high volume levels.

So while everyone else complains (much like they probably did at the AVLS toggle in CD players), I use it to my advantage. I protect myself from those accidental spikes from something (or someone) messing with the scroll wheel, protect the hardware a bit, possibly increase battery life a hair and give myself more accurate control.

Ah yes, it's a wonder that Logitech hasn't been sued yet.

I've only got 5300Es, but at about 35% volume, you have to shout. At 100%, you can't hear anything but your music. I've tested it. I also listened to the two hour ringing outro. That learned me quick.

Thats like suing a gun company because the gun they produced killed someone.

I hear they are going to be making stickers to put on products that aren't idiot proof soon.

TMM, i'm fairly sure somebody's done it.

What's next, a sticker affixed to the bottom of a gun barrel "Warning: Projectiles fired from this opening may kill you! Do not stare directly down the barrel of this gun!"

The problem is that a universal force noted as "Luck" is in opposition to mister darwin. Working hand in hand with factors such as "medicine", Luck is allowing the genetic algae to flourish, and somehow not die in these conditions.

And once again, we may say "Only in America".

IMHO, limit the car's speed to 15km/h, so people won't get killed.

Didn't we have this same issue with Walkman's in the 80's?

Damn maybe we were intelligent enough back then to turn the volume down all by ourselves.

I suppose if you had a kid and you wanted to buy it an iPod it might be nice to still be heard when you shout "pass the salt" over the dinner table. Yeah, I know... unrealistic scenario. Who had dinner tables these days; and salt is just soooo 1980's; AND who earn enough to feed their own technology habit let alone their kid's? Get a job you mangy runt!

I tihnk it's a step in the right direction for apple. My concerns are not for myself, for I have PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, and not for the sheep who listen to bad music loudly and burn out their ears, but for the Hi-Fi industry. If everyone between 15 and 30 burns out their ears, what's going to happen to Hi-Fi? Deaf people aren't going to buy stereos. Stereo manufacturers will have lower sales. We'll be stuck with boomboxes designed for the hearing-impared in 30 years if this happens.
