Personally, I don't quite see the point, other than for bragging rights. OSX has unix underneath, right, and WinXP is there for games & stuff. Can someone explain what Linux brings to the party that isn't covered by the other two?

Yes, OS-X has unix under it, but it's not anything like the flexibility offered by true linux, where you can pick your distro, choose your gui, and run bash natively.

OK, so then why do you need OSX then? Dual-boot XP and Linux... For me, Boot Camp does everything I would need.

So if you don't need OSX, why bother with a Macintel?

It's like asking, why would you need windows if you use OSX? Why would you want OSX if you want windows? all three are very different systems and each is strong at a certain thing.

Possibly to use your MAC as a server
maybe beacause linux has a fair bit of support even with games, but OSX doesnt Personally it all seems like hassle to me but atm i have no desire to buy a mac anyway - Windows does everything i need (mostly gaming, but also some word stuff) And even then, if i didnt like windows, id use linux .... macs are obscently priced anyway ... |

A Multi-Boot-System is just cool, because every of those OS has its special things.
First there is WinXP to play with and to install thousands of little Apps, that nobody needs really, but wan't to run them Then there is Mac OSX which is compared to WinXP much better for real working. I'm a Media-Designer so I'm talking about Photoshop, InDesign etc. At least there is Linux, which is very slim, if you know how to run this thing. So it's real good for some Server-Setup or just for surfing thru the net and load some pRon over P2P

Something I'm wondering... since the Mac will now boot XP and OSX, what's so special about the hardware??? Does anyone else have the suspicion that Apple will dump their position as a hardware vendor in the not so distant future and simply offer their OS and gadgets (ipod, etc.) and services (itunes) following pretty darn close to what Microsoft's business plan is?
Or for that matter sell of the hardware division like IBM did to Lenovo. Being able to get the HW that I want and put the OSes on it that I want will make me more likely to buy those OSes. Right now I have to pay a large premium by buying a Mac to go with OSX so I choose not to use OSx. |
