Huge, huge mistake Sony.

People want a games machine.

Seems like they are trying to force upon us a new storage media, one that is way too early and expensive for most people to adopt (Minidisc, Memorystick, UMD anyone?).

So they think because they have a loyal PS2 fanbase they would be willing to support a new format war? Me thinks not.

I mean seriously, £425!

And I don't accept 'It's a bargin', because I have no doubt that versus a standalone blu-ray player, the one inside the PS3 will be much inferior.

There's another problem to the whole "better than a stand alone Blu-Ray Player" Argument. Say you do use it for games and movies. Now, just say, a bit down the road, when the optical drive gives out prematurely (come on, it's Sony, and these are first run bits), then what? $200, 300, maybe more to replace the drive, because you bought a good "Value"? I'd rather run down the road and grab a cheap $100-150 Blu-Ray player at that point... if i even Blu-Bothered.

£425!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Xbox 360 premium is a BARGAIN compared to that you could get a premium and 3 games with change for the cost of that or a core and 5 games with change. Do Sony think that there product is soooooo much better that they can charge that much of a premium for it. I'm all for the latest tech I mean I don’t think £500 for a HD DVD player is that bad for a first gen new tech but £425 for what is considered to many a toy for the kids is a joke. Can you imagine a 10 year old saying:
Mum can I have a PS3? and then replies how much is it dear? £425, *THUD* as she hits the floor.

International pricing schemes. I always find it funny that when it benefits them, global companies are all for trade barriers being dropped, and sing their praises. They get cheap labour, tax havens, all that stuff.

But as soon as they want to sell something, it turns out there are lots of annoying trade barriers and issues here and there, and oops, actually they have to charge hundreds more in some countries.

Yeah, right. No thanks.

tbh if i want uber gfx and high def movies i'd go with the Xbox and if i simply want games and playing in a super fun new way then i'd go with the Wii, what new and interesting ways can the ps3 clearly define its role within this market as it looks like all bases are covered from both ninty and microsoft....Sony's luck is gonna run out.

personally i really like the xbox, i like the amount of thought that has gone into it and also the Rev,if i could take bits of the xbox like "live" and its unified gfx and HD-dvd player i would and combine it with ninty's back catalogue, controllers and games....now that would be super.

Starting to think that the expected release of standalone blu-ray players at over £700 is the best way sony could then justify a over £400 console. But i really dont see any company bothering to release standalone players if they can not sell them for half the price of the PS3. I mean come on what possible reason is there for buying a stand alone player at that much extra cost. if the quality of the PS3 player is rubbish it will spread like wildfire through the home entertainment forums and one of sony's main selling points goes poof. Personaly I will be leaving my decision to buy the next gen format when it hits the price point at which i bought into DVD. sub £100 player Sub £10 disks. till then the world can revolve without me.

When will they get it through thier thick skulls that we don't want a ****ing blu-ray player, we want a games console.

I know why Solid Snake kills himself now, not to rid the world of his genes. It's also only (hah, only I say) $500 in the US, with the exchange rate at almost £1=$2 again that makes the UK version almost $850. **** you Sony. Add to the fact that there isn't a huge amount of developer support for the PS3 now since it's such a bitch to program for compared to the 360. MGS4 and FFXII arn't worth getting a £425 George Foreman lookalike.

Also, sony are insulting gamers now, saying they should pay even more for the PS3, that nobody complains about a gourmet meal costing alot more than a burger from McDonalds. It's ok when you've got bottomless pockets like you fat cats, but the people who actually BUY your console don't.

not really as the HD capable version of the xbox is roughly 100-150 £ cheaper than the PS3.

Yep. Or you could get a 360 Premium and a Wii for the same price as the premium PS3. The blu-ray player in the PS3 is gonna suck anyway, and it's probably gonna die after 6 months like the PS2.

I was thinking the Wii was stupid, but looking at the E3 pics around the web, it looks like damn good fun, and my opinion of MS has been boosted quite a bit with thier "Wii60" approach.

Seems to me like Sony are telling gamers what they want, not actually giving them what they want.

At the end of the day, the PS3 will still sell. Theres millions of Sony fan boys out there (majority of whom will probably not know anything about technical specs and this whole uproar about Blu Ray vs HD-DVD) who will go and buy a PS3, to add to their whole 'Sony experience'.

Like alot of people here on this forum, Ill be sending my money to the Wii. However, does anyone know if the Wii will feature any kind of hard drive? It should do, especially considering the whole download of Nintendo and Sega back catalogue games. Itd cost a fortune to keep buying SD Cards to store all the games on.
