hard drive help

Tonight my aunt came to my house in a panic saying her laptop wont boot. The laptop is an HP pavilion N5051, and if I recall is about 6 years old and has been around the world more then once. So I plug it in and find that the hard drive is toast. So my question is can I swap the hard drive with any 2.5" laptop drive around the same size? And does anybody know were the hard drive is located on It?

Erm... prolly.

I don't know he model but they nearly all just take standard 2.5 drives... On dell's (the laptop of choice for people asking me to do repairs for some odd reason) the hard drive is in a caddy so just look for a square panel roughly the cross sectional size of the drive. and there will most possibly be one or two screws underneath to release it.

Give me a minute and I'll google up your model.

Edit: Can't seemt to find the N5051, However I have found a dissassembled N5*.. in which the hard drive appears to be slap bang in the middle of the unit, requiring a fair bit more dissasembly then a dells caddy.

TBH. I'd pop the keyboard off... if its the same as this one I can see it willgive you complete access to the drive... if not it will make it blisteringly obvious where it is.

I can't help with the location of the drive unfortunately... but it's a 99.9% certainty that it will be a standard 2.5" hard drive in there

The folks on Laptops4Me might be able to help in regard to locating the HDD in that particular laptop?
It could be worth getting in touch with them, to see if they can help/point you in the right direction

If not... you'll either have to figure out how to strip it down yourself, or contact HP themselves for advice?
