Hm...
Good point. With Conroe and Merom on the way, Intel has a way of fighting back against AMD. However, despite AM2 obviously not being what many people (perhaps erroneously) believed it would be, I don't think AMD are in as much trouble as they could be. Still, it's a step forward for AMD - and I bet Intel aren't happy.

Heehee! What a shocker. I had to read that twice to believe it.
This is great news for AMD .

AMD fan boy myself...as most gamers/modders/clockers currently are.
However the nu intel stuff looks like its going to be amazing...although i'll hold my breath until we get it out and get some bench marks, we've seen to many 'fixed' results before.

I don't think Dell are exactly scared of Intel, given their volumes.
Would be surprised to see Intel in their (non-alienware) desktops or notebooks though - I don't think their target market demands it as yet.

It can only be a good thing really...
*It should* -Create brand awareness for AMD within the general public -Raise the level of competition between AMD and Intel, which means better and cheaper technology quicker. -Lower the cost of low end machines as Sempr0n builds are so cheap, which should interest more first time pc buyers. Or AMD will just become big headed money grabbing gits ![]() Not a lot of things live up to the hype, so I'm really not to fussed about AM2 or Conroe until we get the real facts and figures

i don't think intel needs dell as much as dell needs intel. but the same isn't true for amd... amd needs dell, but dell doesn't need amd as much...
this could be a problem for dell, because i'm sure intel was providing some sort of deal, and i bet that will stop now because of the reason above... anyway, good news for amd. maybe now they will make some extra cash and get their 65nm up to par. |

I think its great that dell is finally offering an AMD option. So many people I know seem to think that only intel make processors, and have never heard of AMD.
As I'm an AMD fanboy I welcome anything that raises theyre profile, and I don't particularly like intel or theyre CPUs. Not sure why, its just that AMD is a close to a 'small' company as you can get in a billion dollar industry. :P Go, the not-so underdog!

To be honest, I now think of Intel as the underdog, given how much faster AMD chips have been for gaming over the past few years. I also thought it was a bit odd that Dell have brought out AMD parts just as Intel's [truly-]next-gen parts are coming out.
PCPro had a review of a Xeon LV server that looks pretty cool. Dell don't seem to be offering anything based on that though... ch424 |

intel's upcoming conroe product aren't that great if running anything that doesn't fit in it's enourmous 4Mb on die cache. In fact if running something bigger than 4Mb it can at times even be slower, heres for those who want to read up on it.

I too think of Intel as the underdog, or have done, so I've been expecting something like this for a long time. It seems odd they'd choose to do it now though, since it seems AMD are just about to be facing comptetion far ahead of the FX-60, which as far as I know, is still the best AMD chip out.
edit: Spaced Invader, that link of yours compared conroes with A64's Mhz per Mhz. Ok, so they may perform relatively similarly at similiar speeds, but I expect the conroe will have a significantly higher ceiling then the FX-60, so a Mhz Vs. Mhz comparison might not be very telling. |

Except that there's no indication that Dell would use AMD other than in their server line.

i personally think this is just dells way of helping intel win the antitrust case. They use amd chips for a bit to help intel out and in a few months when conroe and merom come out they go back to using only intel chips with an actual reason to do so as they seem to offer better performance to what amd currently has to offer

My thought is that for Dell to have chosen to go with AMD so close to the launch of Intel's new stuff, they must have been quite dissapointed by it. Could be coincidence but at a time when Dell would usually be touting Intel's new stuff, everyone wants to talk about the AMD deal.
Dell does need AMD. Thier server market share has been growing every year. Unlike with the consumers (general public), you can't sway big business with just marketing. Your product has to be badass too. To me, that's what AMD has been doing. Quote:
Overall, Dell shipping AMD is good business sense. Doesn't matter if Intel's new stuff is better. There are still people that will want to exclusivly use AMD. |

Hell has certainly freezed, over, i thought that the Alienware purchase was the backdoor plan Dell needed to get some AMD contracts signed and settled. But even with them, you're still a n00b.

OMG the title is so true. Hell Freezes over. I think now because they own Alianware the idea finally hit them that game machines are ment to be AMD. To bad they have decided this when the next gen AMD chip is crapy compared to next gen Intel.

AMD AMD AMD
Im an AMD bloke, have been since I left my P3 500 back 8yrs ago. Altho saying that still running 2 Intel systems as there used for web browsing, I prefer AMD poor intel, never mind. Im sure Dell moving to AMD will make more serious clockers/modders/gamers look at them instead of building there own. Regards GiGo
