A 1Ghz processor sounds realistic to me. With Windows Vista, it's all been about shifting as much of the workload as possible, to the graphics card. So as long as you've got enough RAM, and a DirectX9 hardware supported graphics card, then your rig is fit for the job.

i'll be looking to port my server onto vista if i can, it just about meets the premium settings so should be ok. Saying that though i managed to put xp, including office etc on a pc under the min specs, it worked reasonably too, that was before i knew anything about stripping out the un-needed xp bloat too.

Err, I can run XP Pro just fine on a 450MHz PII with 256MB of RAM and a Rage128 graphics card... Set theme to Windows Classic and turn some of the flashy transition effects off and you're set to go.

Ok, this could be a prob, I run 2048*1536 :/, I spose that would be the reason why i could only run 1600*1200 the beta.

Also 15Gb! It wasn't that big on the beta (i think) or was it ?

I'm guessing all that GFX RAM is needed if you want the flashy glass effects stuff yeah?

I have enough to cover it, but I think I'll be reverting back to windows classic if it's possible.

OSX is 22GB, but that includes stuff like garageband. Of course Vista wasn't 15GB in the beta, but remember that figure includes space for swap file, system restore, and I'm sure there'll be more features in the actual version than in a beta download. 15GB can be compressed onto a 4.7GB DVD if all the files are small.

15GB of HDD these days is what, £4?

I know where you're coming from tho dude, you can imagine the amount of pretty bloat they will be adding. But 15GB is a small worry.

I'm exactly the same. My graphics cards are all memory-loaded enough to max my monitor resolutions. But frankly, I'd rathe be able to actually use my Vram for games, not stupid 67% transluceny effects that I could allready do with a second processor in many apps as it is.

It's not the price of space thats worrying mushky, it's what they're doing with it that's worrying. I mean, XP is what 4-5GB? How can they be releasing an OS that frankly isn't all that different from XP but uses an extra 10GB?

Part of that 15GB will probably be some of the files that still come with XP that date back to Windows 3.0 that have no use at all.

pffft

these are "minimum" specs for it

like xp has a minimum spec of "128mb ram"

however, try and run it less then 256 and you will be kicking yourself

and 512mb is needed for decent operation

so assuming you need 4x the minimum amount of ram for vista also, expect to need 4gb ram

In other words, I'm going to need a whole new system to run Vista? Pfft. I'll stick with XP tyvm. 15gb is a ton, I bet its all bloated code though. Sort of like if they wrote Vista using Dreamweaver.

As I had to learn a few weeks ago:
What's the problem? XP's spec-requirements sounded insane back in '01 too.

yeah, its utter lunacy that the code that runs your entire system could need a whole 5% of your disk space

yahoodam - realise that when XP came out, 512MB was insane, 256MB was pretty l33t and 128MB was the norm

The problem is that would eat up half my 36 Gb 10K RPM SCSI primary drive. I'm still happily putting ME on 4 GB drives for workstations and having plenty of room left over.
I managed to hold off on XP until last year and I plan to hold off on Vista as long as possible. Sooner or later I'm going to find someone to hold my hand through getting linux installed and be done with MS.
