Hmm, seems like for the first time in a while AMD has it's number called by Intel as opposed to the other way around....
This little processor war could get nuclear in a hurry.......

While most games dont take advantage to dual cores, much less dual processors... Consoles are rolling out with just such specs, so as soon as game dev. get used to developing in such a mannor, I think we will see more, and more, of just such games...
Ok, its 4am, i will shut up now and go to bed...

could it actually mean better reliability?
redundant hardware / and each processor not being used as much?

Its as much of a farce as quad sli.... Its like the bugatti veron, lets make the worlds most powerfull n fastest car.. how?? We'll put 2 engines in it!! The Japs have been getting over 1000bhp from cars for years...
It seems that instead of technology getting smaller its getting bigger, how long before its 2xquad sli n 4 cpu's.. 2000watt psu's etc... N cases the size of a small house.. |

anyway 4x4 AMD is just a crazy toy for crazy guys(who want to have, spend, consume, dissipate more). they are leaving alone all the average people...and they'll buy conroe.

Maybe this won't really hit gaming much - just good marketing etc, although I'm personally looking forward to it.
Have been considering upgrading my main PC to a dual Opteron (no need to go into requirements here etc) and this might actually give a more 'affordable' option for faster work stations. No need to buy EEC RAM or indeed the huge price of a good Tyan motherboard (which are worth their price, but still). So not so good from a FPS front, but then if you're image processing or testing SQL environments or something, then this a welcomed developement.

Just a little thought. If K8L is quad core:
"quad core" + "4x4"= 8 cores 8 cores + 4 GPUs= enough heat to warm a smal 3rd world country and a pricetag equal to said country's treasury Don't get me wrong, I would love to have something like this simply because it's absolutely mental but I'd probably have to get a mortgage to pay for it. -ed out |

This can't be K8L, K8L was supposed to be so much better then this, and wasn't meant to be out for a while.
This just sounds like a gimmick that AMD would use to keep people remembering their existance. I hope. |

This is more AMD's way of saying, "ECS made a board which could convert sockets for a cheaper upgrade, we're just giving you more raw powaaaa!

Why?
It's step backwards for gaming hardware, they should be refining performance and reducing power requirements rather than just dumping more stuff on. It's just as stupid as quad SLI. It is a lazy and pointless solution for gaming and a wasted marketing opertunity, but it will have obvious uses in other areas...

They do have a point, you know? You don't necessarily need to drop a second X2 in there. Think about it: X2 with X1900 co-processor! It might be a huge step forward.

As we where taliing about this in open mic night on NBS, you'll need 4 PSU's for it too
. But seriously, quad core, Quad sli ? What is point, theres's no way your high -end gamer can possible use all 4 cores at once, maybe this could be useful with vista but it's overkill ![]() -Fr4nk

I bet the benchers will love it though and I am personally interested in the idea of having a physics co-processor rather than something like Physx.

Dont see what all the fuss is about.. you have been able to have dual CPUs for ages (since the P2 at least) and well you can have dual dual core opterons / xeons (even a 16 core mobo from iWill) the point really is that 1 conroe will cost about $300? and one FX will cost about $300 -- so thats 600 for the dual FX, and 300 for the conroe -- you could just get a dual core dual xeon, or a dual core dual opteron for that and have a box that can do far more than gaming.
Also : will the FX pair have 4DIMMS per CPU (like the opteron) or just 4DIMMS split between them? |
