The BBC has calculated that once analogue terrestrial is turned off in 2012 there will be enough bandwidth to carry 6 high definition channels, enough for the five main channels plus one.
Pleeeeease say BBC3 will be in HD aswell.

It's good news but 6 HD channels isn't enough. Looks like i'll be getting Sky for some HD loving in the future.

I just worry that due to the sever lack of bandwidth available, the HD bitrate will gradually be reduced as more channels (like SD freeview) are added.

I suppose the same fear can be held with Sky HD. Anyone know if there are any 'minimum bitrate' specifications HD must maintain to be actually classed as a HD broadcast?

I agree, however the growth of freeview has shown that most people are happy with a smaller group of channels.

BBC2 For Top Gear is all I need.

I watch very little tv, I am more a torrent man.

I don't like having to wait every week and being left on a cliff hanger, and I especially don't like having to schedule time to watch something on tv that much, I would much rather have it on disc to watch when I wanted.

I don't even have a TV

I'm interested to know what resolution these channels will be at. Will they be able to do 6 1080p channels or have they calculated it for the bare minimum 480p?

well how many channels does it support right now ? 6 in channels will be good, but that's 6 years away, HDTV will probably be upgraded to something else by then, but kicking everyone off the terrestrial also isn't a good option, so tough choice, interesting to see if the trail works, though I'm still of the impression a lot of people don't have a HD TV

I don't think theres really any need, at least theres no need to increase the resolution any more, theres only a certain amount of detail your eye can see, and I think 1080p (or whatever it is) is probably slightly above that.

Other than that, what can be improved? Colour? Don't think so. I think the only real step forward after this is full blown hologrpahic images.

actually the digital rendering could be done significantly better, a digital image still doesnt look anywhere near as good as a terrestrial one, they just dont put the time into encoding them, and it shows, digital images end up more washed out ....

You mean you guys dont have dtv over there? im in a relatively small city and we got 30 channels overtheair with hdtv during primetime shows. you guys are way behind.

er.. do you know how much bandwidth that takes?! we wont see more than 1080i/720p overtheair for at least ten years. and youre already like five years behind us. besides, i bet the studios will fight to keep 1080p from free broadcast, they need some reason for us to buy their precious 1080p hddvd/bluray discs.

We have digital TV 3 ways here in the UK. Satellite, Cable & OTA. Unfortunately the broadcasters are using the compression to provide more & more channels that nobody wants to watch, instead of going totally HD.

HD has arrived (just) via satellite & cable, but the companies want us to buy new receivers AND pay more subscription money for a mere 4-6 HD channels.
