Who cares - how well does it clock? I want to know if the PD805 has competition.

Do you have anything that would corroborate that statement? Otherwise, I think it should be duly noted that this is the 'Atanum141 Guess Of The Day'...

Oh why yes squire! Well On other forums, there are reports of AM2 based rigs clocking verywell. I saw a Sempron of all things hitting 2.4/5 on such a machine and it had the Nforce550, which is supposed to be the weakest platform on the AMD side of things. Tho i believe that obviously that not all cpu's are the same but i think we can atlest expect a minium of a 300mhz boost from these things as their 939 brothers perform quite well under these conditions.

Like a dual-core Sempron then? As they only have the 256kb per core cache? It's good to see them following Intel's idea of bringing dual core to the masses/budget concious.

Alot of AM2 stuff is coming out quite abit cheaper than the equivilent 939 stuff, so far i've been very impressed with AM2 chip pricing.

I was planning to at last build my 939 system with the arrival of AM2, but building an AM2 system actually works out cheaper (for all new components anyway).

Like the idea of budget duel core also, might wait a while longer till AMD finalise there nu product line.

it better be cheaper then they say even 140 is about the cost of the cheapest conroe varriant and more than the last of the 940's will cost (in a few weeks not now)...

poor amd, and currently not many large scale oem builders are looking at amd, dispite amd's frequent anti-trust lawsuits in the US over this very issue, and that is sadly the only way duel cores can hit the masses.

but that beggs the question wtf would the masses need duel core for anyways? Less performance loss from spyware and start up icons is all i can think of...

edit : lol this website has the best noob posting tag ever "What's a Dremel?" lol

The only downside to AM2 is that PC8000 modules are ~£330 for 2gb.

Yup. Conroe processors might be cheap, as might AM2 processors, but performance DDR2 is nearly wallet breaking...

infact i was just looking at this
a socket 939 system would be £5 more then an AM2 system (939 has 3800+ x2, NF4, AM2 has NF5, 3800+ x2) (cost without memory)

but the DDR2 memory is a whopping (for 2g) £125 more expensive then DDR (crucial) - in the end the price came out very much higher for AM2, just beacause of the memory

Keep in mind that performance DDR2 is still very much under development and a lot of the stuff hasn't been out for that long. On top of this, until recently, DDR2 has been the niche of Intel, the majority of whose customers were in fact OEMs that purchased rock-bottom value memory.

As both major chip makers switch to DDR2, production will ramp up and high supply and technological breakthroughs will inevitably lower the price. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a very large drop in the next few months...

Aye, I agree completely.

Even so, it'll be a year or two before DDR2 prices have dropped sufficiently for me to say, "OK, Conroe is now a good choice." It wasn't that long ago I picked up an A8N32-SLI. Guess I'll 'make do' with 939 and DDR for a while yet. Nah, I'm happy... it was more a 'state of the market' comment about DDR2 prices as they stand right now. With the way technology goes, by next week, who knows?
