Microsoft must be crazy to think they could get away with such liberties.

Ach well, maybe it's a test run for what they're putting in Vista

Those are some pretty dangerous claims. If they do turn out to be true, MS might have a confidence crisis on its hands. Especially since they can, allegedly, remotely control what is being sent, so they could potentially get docs, IE logs etc... Scary!

And the wall begin to fall for MS and WGA... To bad for Bill, its a real shame that he and the MS development staff did'nt realise that WGA was never going to go down well and this is the outcome of all that Big Brother "hard work"....
Ah well, goodbye WGA it was fun while it lasted, or not...

I can appreciate that they need to ensure that people are using legitmate original software, but to be constantly beaming so much information about you home is ludacrous. Phoning home once when you boot up should be the most that it ever calls home.

The sooner this is gone the better. Wouldn't a better way to go about this be to have the MS server do a checksum on some random, yet essential, file from your windows install (preferably one linked into the activation settings as this is what's normally bypassed) to check that your version is legit? As the file that's checked is random each time you can't get around it by setting up something dodgy and no personal information is collected at all by MS. That's a win-win for everyone in my book.

In light of the fact that there is already a lawsuit in progress for almost exactly the same thing, I'd venture to suggest that this is more of a tactical manoever to force Microsoft into revealing in court exactly what data WGA is sending back to Redmond. As for why the plaintiffs would do that, I can't really think of anything concrete. It may be a fishing exercise.

As I said of the other suit, this smells like a money-grab.

You would think they would have learned somthing from their good friends over at Sony and the rootkit debacle. Big companies need to be reminded one in a while that no, they can't do whatever they please.
