This is definitely a bloody 'ell moment. What next? Internet Explorer sticking to W3C standards? Windows protocols fully documented without non-disclosure agreements?

I guess somebody at Microsoft took the time to read the writing on the wall.

This is very good news. I would have thought them to stick to their new open standard format, .xml, would have been enough... But no, they decided to go one step further and support Open Office's format as well!
Another great move from Microsoft !

Good move by them - I can see it being good for publicity as well as making Office more compatible - MS doesn't lose any cash from offering this compatibility, and it can only result in more sales. Everybody wins .

Very good news. I guess that they finally realise they have such a dominance over the market, that they should stop alienating (sp?) smaller or open source developers and start embracing them.

Minor niggle - it's the OpenDocument standard, not OpenOffice (which would be saying the Word and Excel standards, not .doc and .xls, though it doesn't work too well with proprietary software and closed standards).

Anyways, this is a great thing for everyone. I wonder if someone will end up ripping it apart and adding ODF support to other fairly-current versions of the MS Office suite.

Yet an other step in the right direction, both for MS as for the open source community

Woo hoo,
Just today I had to open a file in openoffice to copy and paste it into Office 2007, would have been much easier if Office 2007 simply supported ODF files. Great news cheers guys!
