I think i may have some family members i never got win2k for. Probably going to have to go round at the weekend and update them before i get the phone calls a few weeks later about boxes just not working! Might have to start teaching people how to use linux, it'll do every thing that win98 did, browse the web, send email and play generic card games.

I've got a Pentium 266 in the loft with 98 on. 4Gb hard drive and 128Mb memory (max it takes). Crashes all the time... "You have performed an illegal operation"

And is much faster at doing it

But OT, this is just natural evolution... You can't expect MS to keep supporting old technology... I would be quite useless to release bugfixes and updates for DOS I know there still are a lot of Win98 machines, that function great, but from a corporate view (from MS) it is 100% loss to keep supporting that old technology.

It's about time really, this is way overdue.

I can see some places like schools/hospitals taking the hit for this but then again I can see a golden opertunity for others to release updates for a small profit

I completely agree. However it doesn't mean i'm happy about having to spend a weekend "fixing" working pc's Just a pitty 98 wasn't more secure in the first place or if we could just find these b*strds who keep realesing these virus and trojans and exterminate them, i could spend the weekend drinking instead!

How about the support for Win ME?
That should be an "easy upgrade" for Win 98 boxes, to keep em running (or crashing) a little longer...

Finally. The OS is far too out-dated to be used now realistically due to the lack of support for hardware etc and Im really glad to see the back end of it. Sure it was alright in its day but times have changed and people needed to be given a shove to move on a little.

Oh, Bah, I like ME.

Does this mean they're not going to complain about people pirating it now?

They should encourage more 98 users to switch to 2000. I find that 2000 is still a very stable O/S and runs sweetly on the older systems.

I still use 98 on my old laptop, 300MHz with 128RAM. It has been a really long time since I bothered to touch the Windows Update site, once I tried to install IE6 on it and that made it crash, a lot, so I gave up installing updates. I tried to run XP on it once and that didn't go over so well. I browse the internet totally unsecured generally on open WiFi, no Antivirus, no Firewall, and I don't have a single problem with it. I even tried to install an Antivirus on it a while back and let it do a scan, it found nothing of course, but slowed down the computer too much to be worth leaving it installed.

I don't know why everybody is freaking out over this. It's not like the computer is going to stop turnning on once they drop support.

the end of an era

i have no doubt though that my dad will run his win98 box for at least a year longer till he upgrades, a bit silly really, since i can upgrade his machine to being able to run XP smoothly and a legal XP install for about 250 euros, which is quite a bargain

lets make a funeral, someone bring a copy of win98, a barbacue, a lots of beer. !!!!! 1 second of silence at 5 AM GMT.

suporting it by part of microsoft is a bit lame, there are far better OS on the market these days, even linux is far better.

A sad, sad day tbh. Windows 98 (SE anyway), was the OS that brought a bit more sense to the world...

For all those stuck with 98SE, I'd say 2kPro is a great upgrade from there - I still love it, even now, as it seems to be a little kinder to slow systems than XP.

I still run 2k on my athlon64 never really seen any advantage with xp, mabye ms should give it away cheap now its only got a few years left to run.

A thought could they not have kept it going till vista at least people with cack boxes could upgrade everthing and get oem windows and a pc capable of running something from this millenium!

Surely the updates aren't that important, Win98 systems are hardly a prime target for hackers and the like.
