I'm looking forward to the 65nm chips, hopefully my current rig can hold out untill then.

It's good to know that current AM2 gear will be compatible with AM3. With the news of Conroe appearing shortly after I purchased my current rig, I began to think 'what if'. But backwards compatibility is always a good thing.

I suppose them putting them memory controller on the chip allows for a DDR3 upgrade quite easily.

Does anybody know what the latency issues are for DDR3?

I know when Intel first switched to DDR2, it was faster than DDR in MHz, but not fast enough to provide a benefit in many situations since it had higher latency.

Seems like AMD is making a rather quick transition to DDR3 -- only sticking with DDR2 for about 1.5 years, while they actually delayed switching to DDR2 for more than that long after intel made the switch a couple years ago. Just wondering if DDR3 will provide a significant benefit that soon, or if it's higher speed will also be hindered by higher latencies?

i don't understand why AMD did go to DDR2 and not DDR3 straight away, DDR2 has been out for so long, and memory manufacturers are having to make lower latency chips for AMD now really

Then again, you cant even buy DDR3 atm (maybe because there are no CPU's that support it) but DDR2 will already set you back £100+ more then the equivalent DDR sticks of ram

i also don't see how this is going to compete with Intel, I'm worried for AMD now, the seem to have plans to 2008 but nothing that makes it sound like it can keep up with conroe

Maybe AMD are going for DDR3 to 'leapfrog' Intel? I don't know how it compares to DDR/DDR2, but it has been running on Graphics Cards for a while now.

I think they;ve sorted the DDR3 problems out now.

ATi and nVidia both have production and technical samples, so they should be able to get some good results.

i believe its a similar step like from DDR to DDR2 really

MiNiMaL_FuSS will become famous soon enough

# AM3 chips will start to appear in "early 2008". These will be compatible with existing AM2 motherboards, but offer DDR3 memory controllers built in along with the DDR2 support offered in AM2.
Taht's the bit I like, the flurry of nu sockets lately has been madness, Socket A was king for a long long time and lots of next gen chips were churned out on it so you could upgrade your computer more slowly.

Since the 754 and 939 and AM2 have come and your system has required a total overhaul form one to the next if you wanted to stay up to date.

The ideal that the next gen CPUs (AM3) will be back-to-back compatible with AM2 motherboards is a very welcome one in my opinion.
