You currently have to do a little more work than simply download either the latest beta of Yahoo! Messenger 8 or Windows Live Messenger. For both networks you have to sign up to the "interoperability" beta to allow your account to access the other. This is to ensure that only a limited number can test out the features before a full release to the public is made.

I actually thought that Live Messenger was being developed specifically because of the merger.
Glad to see it, and I welcome the day when AIM/ICQ/whatever are added to the mix.

IMO the MSN client is the nicest one around. AIM is hideous, ICQ and YIM are bloated to hell and back. Never got on with Trillian.

Sources: BetaNews, MessengerSays , Mess.be

If you currently use WLM and want to add Yahoo! contacts to your list, visit Enable Windows Live Messenger (If you still have MSN Messenger 7.5 you need to upgrade).

If you currently use Yahoo! Messenger 8 Beta and want to add WLM contacts visit Enable Yahoo! Messenger (If you only have version 7 you need to upgrade). Once your account is enabled, you need to sign out of whichever client you're using and back in again.

P.S. To be able to add your Yahoo! contacts to WLM, they need to be using 8 beta too. It will tell (basically - force) them to upgrade if they don't. The same goes for Yahoo! 8 beta users trying to add MSN contacts. Both sides need to have the latest software!

You don't have to sign up to both.

You sign up to the one for the client you're using. The person you're trying to add has to sign up for the client they're using. Until the interoperability beta is complete that is, then it'll allow you/them to add whoever they want without having to enable your account first.

Which still requires you to have TWO separate accounts, one for each, instead of just the one for both.

Just get Trillian. That already allows you to connect to numerous IM accounts at once, and has been doing for years.

Which you need to pay for to get some of the features the official clients include. You can't even use video with MSN users unless they're still using 6.2!

Plus, this isn't even about connecting to multiple networks. You connect to just ONE, and can talk to TWO.

I have all the major accounts and trillian is fine for me, but i never use the Yahoo one and forget the password if i want to sign onto it, so basically i use aim and msn, no one i talk to has yahoo. But i can see the usefulness here.

I've installed the new Yahoo Beta and added MSN people to my list, but I don't see any of them online. The Yahoo Help section says I should click on a link on the top of my Messenger window to enable the MSN link-up, but I can't seem to find it. Could you guys give me a hand?

I had this problem and discovered that both of us (and and a friend using MSN and yahoo IM respectively) need the latest version of the relevant client, both need to register for the beta (which is a simple click - see above posts somewhere) and both need to add each others email address to the contact list. After logging in and out we could see each other.

Everyone needs to be running the latest client and registered for the interoperatability afaik.

Well, that's the problem then. Although it says that if I try messaging someone who doesn't have the newest version, the person would get a message advising the update, and my brother got nothing when I messaged him.

The Yahoo! side of the beta is now filled. The WLM side appears to still have some slots left.

That's probably why I didn't see the link then. Any news on when the beta will end?
