Of course they fail to mention the hidden costs of replacing your graphics card, monitor and operating system to support their lovely new encryption scheme.

I don't think $750 is that steep. Remember when CD-R drives first came on the scene? They cost a lot more. The thing is with going from DVD -> BR/HDDVD is that it is a much bigger leap than the old CD -> CDR transition as HD disks are a new technology, not just added write capabilities. Sure CDR drives were probably over priced back then, but noone really complained then. New, cutting edge technology always has a premium, if you don't like it then you are probably on the wrong site

And when CDR first appeared we were used to paying over £100 for a DVD drive etc. the landscape has changed. Sony are not going to sell many at $750 but this is the rub guys, Sony don't expect to sell many at $750. These are sold for publishers etc. and not for Joe public. In 2-3 months time you will see the $200 Hi-Def recorder for the PC.

The price is ok but there is no excuse for it not being sata, that's an unbelievable design foresight.

Lets try and get this through to people... HDCP IS NOT A SONY THING!

$750 does seem a bit steep but i can remember when CD writers cost £1000 so relatively speaking it is not very expensive for new technology.

750 for the momment is wack. As allready mentioned the price will go down. Sony isn't even intending on selling many BR drives, not to mention the availability\price of a BR-disk. They cannot afford to even produce so many drives. New tech is always very expensive in the begining.

Uhh.. no. Although from what I understand, they've got a scratch-resistant coating that makes them quite durable. Perhaps they were considering cartridges at some point.

Though I've seen the bottom of enough movies to safely say that scratches aren't the problem, stupid people are - fingerprints. How difficult is it to only touch the edges? Unless the drive has a little squegee built in to wipe the fingerprints off, the coating won't be especially useful beyond the desk of the careless IT type.

rude_baboon - true, it's not just them, but they did a LOT to get it in place in the first place. Not like MS with Vista, where they've been forced into compliance (for the first time in living memory) - they wouldn't benefit from closing the analog hole and is annoys the people who are most likely to cough up for the most expensive versions, and if they didn't support it, then everyone would just be complaining that it's not compatible with the new high-def stuff. Sony, OTOH, has a LOT to gain by implementing HDCP on everything, since not only do they sell electronics that are in the market of those things that need to be replaced, they make an ungodly amount on licensing.

Especially if the rumoured < £300 price of a HD-DVD drive is accurate...

Sony take out the DRM? When hell freezes over, pigs fly and MS goes bankrupt.
