Would there be a charge for all this?

There will of course be a cost to running these networks, which the operators will want to recoup somehow - no such thing as a free lunch. However, the manner in which they recoup their costs might not be via a direct point-of-use charge to the user. They may do what I suspect Google will be doing with their US mesh networks, which is to offer location based search / targeted advertising. For example, you're in your city's mesh network - it knows which node you're on and therefore (roughly) where you are - you fire up your browser and are redirected to a page offering local search - type 'pub' and it shows all the pubs in your vicinity.

Certainly I would expect that, having spent big bucks on installing a mesh, the operators would offer limited, revenue generating services, such as a location driven local search service, free of charge to all wi-fi users, with some kind of bandwidth / time based charging model for those wanting access to the wider internet.

BT are such utter tossers. They tout schemes like this, but all they really need to do is start rolling out proper copper or fiber lines, instead of the aluminium **** they've been using. I get a 512/256 line, it drops about 20-40 times a week, generally for 5 minutes to 30 minutes, sometimes for up to 6 hours or so. I'll never get better then that, and they have no intention of upgrading my line. I know people like me are happy to have DSL, and should be, but come on, we're living in the damn stone age by comparison with most decent countries. BT need to be made to get their act together, and lay out the lines that are needed.

Adsl guide had a news post lately saying that it was currently being considered to raise the power limit on WiFi devices from I believe a current 0.1 watts to 10 watts, presumably this is related ? Though there was also talk of that increasing static quite a lot I think ? meh why am I even trying to relate this second hand anyway ?

And yes, agreeing with spec, fiber to the curb would be excellent (the local boxes are usually well within the full speed range of most dsl services and would allow higher standards like adsl2+ I understand, plus making otherwise long lines quite short)
