So only person managed to find a vulnerability. I'm sure they'll get it fixed in no point.

Someone found an exploit that quickly - points towards the Vista having a few more flaws than originally hoped.

Well as she did what Microsoft wanted her to do, the vulnerability will be covered and there might be a few more vulnerabilities found in the code in the next few months and it'll help create a better OS and a more streamlined and functional program that will allow for greater security and reliability for the user...

I'd say this was a way of finding vulnerabilities, rather than an attempt to prove how secure Vista is. Otherwise they would be offering large sums of cash to the winner. Or are they?

Not surprised.

Vista is based heavily on code used throughout XP.

by a woman!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! i am not trying to be sexist but i think this is rather interesting, any software has holes and bugs, this is a beta of a OS so this is natural.

Always good news, one less 0day to hit after Vista is released into the public domain. A good idea from MS I feel. Also shows they are being "proactive" about finding and fixing holes in the code.

Its also not that heavily based on XP, they rewrote over 50% of the code at least

I like the idea that they are trying to fix it before they release it. I'm not a fan of MS in any way but testing the OS as much as possible before release is good. What better test than a challenge to hackers?

The fact that it is by a woman is neither here nor there. I am glad MS are releasing this for public beta so that these holes can be found and fixed.

When it all comes down to it next year most hardcore gamers will have upgraded to Vista so that they can play the latest games so I'd rather holes were found now than later

Id rather they found 100 vulnerabilities now rather than 100 after final release Seams like a good thing in my opinion.

Oh no! Vulnerabilities. Isn't that to be expected? What OS connected to some sort of network isn't vulnerable? I bet Mac OS and Unix/Linux have hundreds of undiscovered holes. They just don't seem to make the spotlight as much as Windows. Probably because most hackers would aim their efforts at a widely used OS, and Windows has come to be the "big bad corporation OS" in many alternate OS users' eyes.

well at least the person told MS about it

it seems like a good idea in theory, but whether people will tell MS about the vaulnerabilities, is another question

if MS give you £500 for every glitch you find, then it would probably work quite well

if they are the same 100 holes then yes, but if pre-release with just some beta code, hackers can already quickly and easily find 100 attack vectors, just think of what happens when they start to seriously pile all over final code

i get your point though, and i applaud MS for doing this, it isnt anywhere near the bug fixing possiblity of open source software, but this does allow for develloping a better end product

i should dig up my CT book about OS', and see what that was about again, i hardly read it when i followed the class i got it for, i might learn some nice stuff

i do like that MS is changing stuff like drivers and the visual parts of windows to user mode instead of kernel mode, no more reboots, and a whole lot less entry points for malicious stuff

It's a step in the right direction at least but I'm pretty sure we're going to see a few service packs after final release.
Don't get me rong, I'm in no way banging on MS's new OS. I've tried the Beta and to be honest I like it quite a bit. As mentiond above, rewriting an OS is no easy task, there WILL be holes, no dought about that.
Lets just hope they're going to be small ones and 'plugged' quickly.

This is a smart move by microsoft, not in any way is it an "egg in the face". the more this release gets hacked the more imune it will be when released. that is the same for all products, if you want to test it tell people to hack it, then you will know where it is weak.
