It may have been a mistake, but it is quite intresting nonetheless. I mean, people largely think they're anonymous and untracable on the internet, so they behave in an honest fashion while doing things like searching. People who want to look at dead bodies can't go ask a coronor or a funeral director, but with google all you need to do is ask and you'll get to see some.

Intresting stuff to me.

i agree with spec.

it makes interesting reading, it also begs the question shouldn't AOL be questionning users searching for "lolita" about their intentions?

Is that really so bad?

Although, I do agree with fev, if users are searching for things like that then they do deserve to have their IDs sent to the authorties.

Lolita is the name of a well known American book and movie, it is possible that this was the reason for the search and not the darker connection to child pornography, but some how i doubt it.

The annonimity povided by th internet alows people to feel safe, and when they feel safe they do things that they may know to be wrong, and that they would not do in a normal situation or have access to. I am not surprised by the things people search for, Im surprised more of the search results are not pornograhic, or contriverisal.

how do you know i dowloaded kiddies? hence "invasion of privacy".

i agree these kiddy porn watching f***s should be put in jails for the rest of their natural lifes and get raped by a big man called Jon Bigrock and his friends everyday of the year.

fev's arguement brings up a good point from a commerical aspect. When choosing a search engine, who are you going to go with? AOL who released the info and who released aggregate search infomation to the government, or Google who fought them every step of the way? I wouldn't use AOL regardless, but to me this is just another arguement for Google.

To put it another way, reporting your paying customers to the authorities is not a good way to retain paying customers, regardless of the outcome.

Im all for the death penalty - But I wouldnt like my ISP questioning me over search terms. Visiting kiddie porn sites can be reported to authorities, no problems with that. But no questions over search terms no matter what they are.

Yet another reason not to use AOl methinks, but no seriously, lolita has more than one meaning as previously stated, so not a lot can be done to report those people, if the search records were released and there were search submissions for things like "child porn" and "kiddy rape" then yeh, obviously thats gonna go straight to the police etc... A lot of the search terms reported are all circumstancial, in that the search terms could have been submitted for a number of reasons, maybe your doing a school project on child abuse or something.... the records make it look like your about to kill your 8 year old brother or something, but its actually compltely opposite. My own conclusion is that those search terms cant really be taken as gospel... its just not enough to come to conclusions on, now if you had those users URL click history, thats a different story....
