they were prototypes tho, i've had 2 full production 360's breakdown, doesnt stop me liking it and it hasnt happened on this third one, which ive had a while now so hopefully on the newer ones its been fixed but its certainly a worry.

i never noticed much in the way of ventialtion on any ps3 shots tho, anyone know what the cooling system is like?

I am sure many new products in development have a few teething troubles. With the PS3 having such a high profile and large expectations, I think things are generally blown out of proportion. Some electronics getting a little bit hot is probably a walk in the park remedy for the boffins in the Sony labs.

I suppose a room a room full of the machines at a show under spotlights are bound to get a little to hot and crash sometimes. my old PC used to do the same in the summer

Though its no surprise to me that there are still several major/minor problems with the PS3 but I think that these will be removed from the final production models. I doubt that the PS3s at the Tokyo Game Show were the final production models, just a stepping stone to the final release...

I gotta say I called this. After every Sony fanboy I know was making cracks that my 360 (from launch day) was gonna overheat. Everytime they said it, I had to remind them that this is only 3 cores compared to the 8 that are supposed to be on the PS3, plus a PS2 board as well. The fans maybe quiet, because they aren't on high enough. Unfortunately there is no great silent, yet economical cooling solution. That goes for all platforms PC, 360, and PS3. Im sure the Wii doesn't have enough power to have to worry about lots of heat.

I am really looking foward to the release of the PS3, but I will also wait a few months before I buy in. I remember the PS2 debacle here in America, where I went through 4 PS2's before getting one that would play DVD's and PS1 titles.
I have had some disc read issues and heat related issues with my 360, but I would consider it a growing pain with the new hardware. Sony is in the really bad position right now though of having bashed 360 for releasing two versions at different price points while cutting out key features and attempting a worldwide launch and stumbling through it, by not having enough units. Here we are a year later almost and Sony is following suit. Releasing two version with missing features and promising a worldwide launch then botching it. I am no fanboy of any company, but if we are paying upwards of $1000.00 dollars on a new console launch,( with games, memory cards if you bought the $600 model, HDMI cables that do not come with the system and an extra controller) we should not have to deal with technical issues that have us out a system while all the territories catch up on stock. I know that we could have a flawless launch in November, but the realist in me says that will likely not happen.

The Tokyo game show was only 6-8 weeks before the launch. If the manufacturers weren't tooled up and producing production models, I'd be worried.

I agree with you, most products especially in their first release and pre-release have many bugs and quality control on every electronic product Is in the neighboorhood of a few percent not working, so If 500,000+ are bought on launch day a good few thousand won't work. Xbox 360 had that problem ps2 had the problem etc etc.
nothing I'm concerned about, but I can't afford a ps3 anyways

I really hope PS3 crashes and burns along with Blu-Ray, just take Sony out of it's misery. My guess is that since they are seemingly rushing the PS3 into production after a couple of years stalling for time, there will be one hideous flaw in millions of units just like thier batteries.

I think heat is a serious issue with all modern consoles. Unlike the good ol days of console gaming, these are truley now nothing more than a specialized high end PC packed into a small enclosure. Even mighty Microsoft had problems with that too, PS3 will be no exception to some problems with the first batch. Smart money is wait until the second release

With the increasing power of everything, we will have cooling pipes to our houses along with power, gas and broadband.
[/sarcasm] <-or is it?

I will also be waiting for a version or two or three before getting one. At least untill they no longer need an extra cooler as there are availible for the 360.

Those machines were on for days on end and taking tons of abuse from the thousands of poeple using them every day. I'll take this story with a grain of salt. I wouldn't be suprised though. If this is a REAL problem hopefully they will fess up to the mistake and give free repairs on effected systems, not unlike Microsoft did with the first gen 360s.

They do that already, it's called your water main. The water that comes out of it is usually pretty cool, cool enough to circulate through your computer/ps3/home theater a few times and then get dumped into the water heater to be further heated.

*prepares to buy shares in sony*

think of this as a business lesson... sony do bad, don't waste time bitching about it. Buy some shares so you can reap the rewards when they do pull their finger out
