Does the fact they're planning a major service pack to Xp over a year after Vista comes out not suggest at how slow MS really expects the uptake on Vista to be? If Vista is so great why would anyone want to wait a year for possible Direct X10 support?

There are some cynics in the community who are suggesting that this is a ploy to get users upgrading to Vista. However, I would say that those who are going to go to Vista - or not - will not be affected either way by a new Windows XP service pack. The difference in functionality is not comparable.
Unless there is no DX10 for XP...

2K had its last service pack about a year ago, MS still supports it, its not due to the thinking that uptake will be bad, its keeping those that dont get it happy.

Huh, SP3? Hadn't heard about that before. What's the point? I thought IE7 was being released for XP anyway? What other major components are they going to add, media player 11? What a joke.

Why the f*** didn't they release Vista with the core updates (net code, search facilities, aero, etc.) ages ago and then add all the bells and whistles afterwards as service packs or new versions, rather than drag everything out for so long. Noone cares about having media player 11, IE7, media center, DX10, etc. We want a new OS not a new everything.

Ok, so obviously IE7 was a big priority but if Vista had been released 6-12 months ago there would've been plenty of time to develop it and release it as un update for either both XP and Vista or just Vista (as it would've had a reasonable market share by now).

I know i'm rambling a bit but seriously they seem to have gone about this so badly it's just mind boggling.

As far as I heard there won't be DX10 for XP anyways. One of the main reasons MS announced Vista as THE new OS for gamers.

Meanmotion, if they strip out all the big features and leave them for upgrades then why would anyone upgrade to Vista over XP in the first place?

The only reason I'd feel like upgrading is DX10. Vista is supposed to be a complete resource whore so I'd rather not waste 500mb of ram on some shiny user interface if I can help it.

And can you not imagine all the snide comments from the usual MS-bashers if they'd done that?

XP is still, today, the latest MS OS. They're showing it's not being forgotten. And when the punters get Vista with their new PC they want a complete package, not a few bits and an IOU.

Some people are still using Win98, many more Win2k. Businesses who upgraded to winXp only a few (2-3) years ago aren't willing to spend millions again for vista for their thousands of machine.

I dont like M$ but people complaining about SP3 is just overboard.

Since the only computer I own that could benifit from the sp3 upgrade is my mediapc HTPC, and not even benifit since the vista version of media center is so conveluded and dumb. I expect sp3 to use a similar version of media center as vista, or upgrade it in some way that makes no sense

Honestly, is dx10 really that big of a deal? or is the new directx going to live up to the hype.

Media player 11 isn't a joke atall, it's the only thing that dragged me away from iTunes.

Also can people stop calling Microsoft M$, it just annoys me.

hmmmm..... i wont get vista for a long long time, and i dont care that all games will work only with DX10, i want my moneys worth of OS that is made in a monopolistic way.

i bet that a few days after vista gets out "someone" will make a DX10 driver or emulator for XP

See, you've all just wonderfully contradicted yourselves and backed up my point.

Some won't get Vista for a long time cause they wanna get their moneys worth. Some want the new fangled DX10 as soon as poss. Some don't see the point of DX10. etc.

I.e. You can't please everyone all the time so why not take a leap and come out with a new OS with some core useablility improvements and go from there. That's what sets a new OS apart, not the latest version of media player, IE, or DX. After all people use itunes, i use BSplayer, and the current DX is perfectly good. In fact, I would really much rather have DX10 as a seperate thing so that i can make the decision when i want to have to fork out for new hardware to run the latest games but still have a 'better' OS.

Sorry i'm dragging this off topic.

As for the update, well, can't be anything but a good thing. Hard to judge too much without knowing what's going to be on it.

Spot on

Is anyone going to actually buy vista because it is more pretty than xp? Someone must have forgot about the plethora of themes you can get for XP if you really cannot stand your windows machine to look like one. If XP will get dx10 functionality for free with sp3?

Not that I care either way, there is much more to a computer than its ability to play games. And frankly dx10 is just not "all that and a bag of chips"

MS came out like a year ago and said that DX 10 would NEVER be on XP. does that mean i cant be hopeful, no.

and the reason XP will live on probably longer than any other OS as far as suport, is because there are no updates that i am aaware of that will bennifit buisness in Vista. honestly i thnk MS is loosing sight of who their user base is with vista. great it can do more. the average person isnt going to understand it. ive been using OS's all the way back to DOS and this ones a pain in the ass to navigate, some simple options are put in awquard places. the visuals while purdy in the beginging get bland and boring and in alot of cases anoying.
do i understand why MS is doing it.... yes
but they dont know what they are doing. maybe the under ultimate versions of the OS will be easier to deal with. maybe the non-64 bit version isnt nearly as buggy. maybe i wont have to go through 6-8 OK's before i can instal software i DLed in the final version. however, i wont be upgrading till DX10 is widely used.

First thing I do when I get Vista is turn off the fancy interface, they're just rediculous resource whores.

It's much more than just an OS with a new media player, IE and DX, well it was untill they decided to cut out as many of the best improvements as they could. What I was looking forward to is a new, improved, streamlined file system but that got cut out.

They've also apparently rebuilt the kernel from the ground up, I have no idea what that means at all though, dunno what pine nuts have got to do with windows.

I myself am gonna wait on this one untill I think it's worth it, probably get it at the same time a do a big upgrade to my rig. I havn't really heard fantastic things about it from beta testers though, but then I've only heard the bad stuff.

I don't know. I think alot of people wont bother to upgrade to vista anytime soon just for the reason, xp still works.(as well as it ever has) Why pay money to learn a new operating system.
For most non-tech people, xp does enough.
